True Cable Router Hard-coded Port Forwarding

Featured Replies

True recently forced me to upgrade to cable internet from ADSL, and the new router they've given me has a port forwarded that seems to be hard coded into the software.

Local IP Address: 100.119.200.150

Start and End Port:  30083

External IP Address:  0.0.0.0

Protocol:  TCP

I can delete the rule, but then it reappears when the router is rebooted.  Also, I can disable the wifi, but it's back to being enabled with a reboot.

I've tried some port scanners and it doesn't look like the port is open to the internet, and netstat doesn't say anything is listening on 30083 (the local IP of my computer isn't 100.119.200.150 anyways).

The router says Turbospeed on the front, but when I checked their website in Taiwan I couldn't find the right model.  A further search shows it's probably an ASKEY-TCG220.

Has anyone found the same thing?  What are the security implications?  I can't find anything in the menus for remote access enable/disable.

Is it possible to buy my own cable modem like I did with ADSL?  A couple things I read said you can't buy your own with cable internet.

Cable Broadband or Fiber Optic routers both use a 'shared wire' topology and require they be pre-registered on the network before they'll function.

But there's no harm in asking them if you can buy your own, or if they have another brand/model available.

Most ISPs only allow their provided equipment on their network.  They also will have their units 'branded' and loaded with special firmware that allows for quicker provisioning or customer aftercare (read: contains multiple back doors).
