Only 510 cases of dengue fever were reported in the first three months of this year, a drop of 62 percent  compared with the same period last year. A National Centre for Parasitology, Entomology and Malaria Control report said the incidence was 3.1 out of 100,000 people. There were no fatalities.

“Dengue fever cases in 2017 decreased by 62 percent compared with the same period in 2016, when there were 1,366 cases,” the report said. Three people died last year. The report said 80 percent of the cases occurred in Phnom Penh and in Kampong Cham, Siem Reap, Kandal, Banteay Meanchey, Preah Vihear, Kampong Thom, Prey Veng, Tbong Khmom and Kampong Speu provinces.

Centre director Dr Huy Rekol, who wrote the report, said dengue fever cases in neighbouring countries generally rose early this year. “It shows that dengue fever in our country is under control,” he added. Dr Rekol said more than 71 percent of dengue patients were aged between five and 14. Most were at school.
