PM: State projects must not adversely affect public livelihood

BANGKOK, 12 May 2017 (NNT) – The Prime Minister has instructed related officials to ensure that various government projects do not cause troubles to public members.

A meeting has been convened by Minister of Interior Gen Anupong Paochinda to follow up on the progress of the development of riverside areas along the Chao Phraya River. Although the project was earlier approved by the Cabinet and is already underway, Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha has urged all responsible units to handle each involved procedure with utmost prudence.

The premier emphasized that any state policy or project given the green light by the Cabinet must not inflict damage on the country or negatively impact the people’s way of life.

During the meeting, the attendants also discussed the relocation of riverside communities as a result of the Chao Phraya development project as well as the compensation of all affected residents. On March 14 this year, the Cabinet set aside a budget for the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration to use to conduct various operations, including the dismantling and relocation of structures.

The Chao Phraya River needs a major overhaul as do many of the supporting canals. As a result tens of thousands of Thai citizens who have traditionally lived near and on the river will be displaced. May Buddha help them, because they will never be allowed to return.

I hope the compensation is more than sufficient, but in similar land requisitions in Australia, compensation was always pitiful and well below land prices and market expectations. I suspect the same will occur here.
