A girl I met several years ago and have kept in contact with on an infrequent basis over the years sent me an e-mail last month that seemed shall we say inconsistant with my knowledge of facts. If she is truly in trouble I want to be supportive but I suspect that she has gotten the idea to try and get some money out of me. Her story gives me my own suspicons of what she has been up to lately but I will let you make up your own minds. Here is the story.

This 24 year old girl lives in On Nut and works at a restaraunt about a kilometer from her apartment(or atleast says she still does). On her way home from work a man tried to rob her and she defended herself with a knife from work. The attacker died and she was taken to Lumpini police station and held for 400,000 baht bail. She claims the attacker has important friends. A policeman took pity on her and let her send e-mail to try to make bail. I refused to help her and a week later she sends a message saying another farang friend paid her bail.

If she has turned to scamming, as I believe, I don't want anything to do with her but if there is a possibility that this is real I don't want to abandon her. She was a good person in the past.

Please don't reply with assumptions or oppinions as I already have that. I am looking for practical knowledge such as whether a prisoner from On Nut would be taken to Lumpini and possibility of e-mail.

I am almost positive this is all bullshit but I want to know if it is possible before I break contact. If it is possible I will go through the trouble of verifying her story.

If you are not a troll, you are a chump.

So I am a chump because I allow for the posibility of an unlikely story to be true? I have known her for years, she never worked in a bar as far as I know, and she never asked for money before. I have no plans to give her any money.

You must be a great friend to have if you will just abandon somebody in a bad situation because you think they may be lying. Sorry if I am a chump but it doesn't cost anything to give her the benefit of the doubt for the time being.

a street mugger attacks an on nut restaurant worker , he surely couldnt have been expecting to gain more than a few hundred baht and maybe a gold chain. i doubt what would appear to be a small time thug would have friends of any importance .

if the attacker was not known to the girl , how does she know of his important friends?

do the police set bail here or do the courts ?

400,000 seems a lot of bail for a restaurant worker.

As far as I am aware, Lumpini Police Station does not cover as far down Sukhumvit as On Nut. The Police Station covering that area would be Thonglor I believe

PhraKanong police station is right there. A quite big station too. I've been there (I didn't do anything wrong, really govnor) and they seemed good.

- why would she be carrying a knife from work? Doubtful that she could have time to get it out and stab the man. Also I think that would have been a decent size case and on TV, if it really happened - my missis would have told me, but hasn't. (she has fak all else to do but watch TV!)

If you think about it, then the logic does fall apart. This is inline with a Thai tale. Good of you to think about helping another human being though.

If she is out on bail, then meet up with her and ask to see the police documents.

All good points that made me imediately suspicious. The most glaring one to me was claiming she was taken to Lumpini although for all I know Lumpini is a central lockup facility for the area. That is why I asked here.

I do plan to ask to see court papers when I am in Bangkok and I will question her abot the details. Liars usually slip up in the details but since I don't know much about the system in Bangkok I wanted to let you guys pick apart the details so I have a better idea what isn't right.

Thanks for the support. I expected more insults like the first reply but I am pleasantly surprised.

most likely any suspects would be taken to Phra Kanong or the presumed Onnut station and precinct; there is no reason to go to Lumpini other than there being a police hospital, but that is for the injured/deceased perhaps, nothing to do with her.

Bail under these proceedings would be highly unlikely to be anywhere near that amount given the story, if there was any bail set at all AFAIK. She would have been held if there was a chance she had committed a crime, and any pay out therefore would not a bail, but a bribe to escape the charge altogether.

More likely, if there is any police story, she might have been discovered engaging in something illegal e.g. holding large amounts of drugs and had to pay someone off. Or....this is a story to get you to cough up some money. Bail in any case would probably be no where near this magnitude.

The fact that there is someone willing to pay out 400k that you have not heard of and don't know even though this is your 'friend' suggests you are not close friends even if this were true. And if she did indeed stab the person to death then pay her way out to avoid going to court, then I'd wonder whether you would want such a person as a friend.

Get the info that the police gave her, scan it and PM me; I read and speak Thai, I'll tell you what is says. My bet is it will bear not much resemblance to what you have been told, but I have been wrong before.

very very unlikely if you ask me.....and self-defense is also in the Thai criminal books. Moreover, a thug that nugs on restauarant staff has very unlikely a direct connection to higher powers. Put the other Farang in the play who alledgedly coughed up 400k for bail.....naaaaaaaa! :o

PS: I don't think that this is a troll story - just a genuine guy new to Thailand!

Thanks everybody for the replies, and thanks steveromagnino for the offer.

I have little doubt that the story is at the least not completely true although I thought it might be adjusted to save face. My initial thought was one of two scenarios.

1. Everything is a lie to get money. When money didn't come the "other farang" story was used to explain her not being in jail.

2. She was trying to make some money by hanging around lower sukhumvit and refused to pay some Thai gangster for the privilege and had an altercation. I have no idea if the street walkers are forced to pay someone to work down there. This might explain the Lumpini connection.

I will ask to see the police documents but I expect her to say she doesn't have them as whatever they say I doubt they will corroborate her story. Now that I am sure the original story can not be true I can question her and hopefully find the real truth.

It would have been more crafty on your part to not simply refuse the money instantly. That's very Western-culture of you. Not that there's anything wrong with that..... :o

You could have collected more information if you had asked where to send the money, how to send the money, etc. Say that you'll need time to decide how to get that much cash together. See if the "policeman" will let her call you back again, etc. Kind of a delaying action while you learn what you can.

Later you could ask if you could send someone to see her at the police station......

I'm sure you realize the amount being discussed probably represents 4-5 years of salary for someone who works hard in a restaurant.
