BANGKOK: -- Traffic flowed at a slower pace than normal at Bangkok's Ratchayothin Intersection during the morning rush hour on Monday as the new school semester began.

Traffic police kept on the green traffic lights for inbound lanes to Ratchada and Pahonyothin roads for 60 seconds longer than usual to accommodate the higher volume of vehicles heading to the city.

The Metropolitan Police Bureau planned various measures in a bid to cope with the expected increased traffic congestion during the morning and evening rush hours including police directing vehicles since 5am and being prepared to quickly respond to broken-down vehicles.
