How to change the home country on my Samsung Phone from Thailand to UK

Recommended Posts

I have a Samsung J7 Prime phone, bought in Thailand, and I have just relocated back to the UK.

The phone screen saver shows me 'roaming' in the UK with the local UK time, along with home time as Thai time. (see pic).

The Home screen shows Thai time and Bangkok weather. (see pic)

I cannot find any way to change this info to UK. I think it is connected to my account on Google, but I have gone into the settings and cannot find any way to change my 'home' to UK.

I have even sent a query to Samsung from my Phone 'help' screen and they have replied to say they are looking into it….

Can anyone throw any light on this?

Thanks

Settings> date and time> set time zone.

Alter the clock-weather widget settings from the theme setup of whichever theme you are using (generally a long push on a blank part of the home screen).

For the Play Store, as you have permanently left Thailand: Settings> apps> application manager> Google Play Store> Force stop> + then Storage> Clear Data + Clear Cache.

Restart the Play Store to have access to UK apps.

Thanks, I wish it was that easy.

Tried all that and nothing works -it still defaults back toThai time and Bangkok weather - even though I didn't live in Bangkok,  The phone carries two sets of times - but shows Thailand as my home time, and UK as my roaming time. If you look at the screen print I posted before, you can see the UK time in the top right-hand corner.

The time and zone settings are set to UK zone and time, but it doesn't make any difference. (see screen print) I'm almost certain it is tied up with my account settings (Google). I have gone into my Google account profile, changed the phone number to Uk, but cannot find any setting to change the "Home" from Thailand to UK. Any more ideas?

Delete the homescreen widget (long push on the widget then slide to trashcan) and then recreate it (probably a long push on a blank part of the home page as I mentioned). Widget functionality depends on which launcher you are using.

You don't seem to follow that the screen print that shows "Home" time and "roaming time" is not the home screen. It is the "power on 'screen before I have swiped and done my security to get to the home screen. I cannot control anything on this screen except the background wallpaper. It still shows me as having my Home in Thailand and roaming in England.

As far as the weather widget is concerned, I have removed it before and then reinstalled it - still shows Bangkok weather and time. Usually, when I move around Thailand it automatically changes the weather to the town or area  I am in. My previous phone - a Note 2 -showed UK weather when I visited England, so this is all very odd.

There is something in the phone which has programmed its home as Thailand, but there must be a way to change it.

BTW I can access all Uk apps through the play store without doing anything, although I do recall clearing the cache some time ago when I first had this issue with Home and Roaming.

I've found another weather app/widget which works fine. So it's just the "pre-home" screen that won't change to UK.

If you turn on "Automatic Date and Time" (post 3) does it make any odds?

I've tried both. It was on auto, I just switched to manual to show you the settings.

Now I've got the weather and time to work, by using a downloaded widget instead of the one that came with the phone. (which still shows Bangkok time etc.) on the home screen, I'm nearly there. But I can't seem to do anything about the Roaming and Home time on the login/unlock screen.

Your phone displays ROAMING because your phone has 2 SIM cards, EE and AIS. You are roaming on AIS, as indicated in your Status Bar.

Have you tried physically swapping the SIM positions, or just remove the AIS SIM temporarily and see what happens

I had previously tried swapping them round, but it made no difference, so as you suggested, I took the Thai Sim out, and the login screen just showed Uk time.

When I re-inserted the Thai sim in slot 2, the phone still showed Home as Thailand and roaming as UK. I even went into the device Samsung account in settings and made sure the registered phone number was the UK sim number, but the phone still shows 'home' as Thailand. I have also done a master wipe of the cache.

It's no longer a big deal - I will live with it. Unfortunately, I need the Thai sIm to handle otp's for my Thai bank account, Otherwise, I would leave it out.

You can rename your sims, call the UK sim home, change the icon.

Settings>sim card manager>sim>icon or rename it.

I just received a reply from Samsung in Thai and bad English.

They have told me that the only way I can change my Home country is to open a new or change my Samsung account, which is pretty much what I thought. They said that I must do this on wifi and not from my Thai sim card.

I was going to do this except I received a warning on the phone that if I changed my account, I might be locked out of the phone unless I deactivated the lock-out first. I couldn't see clearly how to do this and the last thing I want is to be locked out of my phone, so basically I've given up.

But at least I understand the reason... sort of....

Here is what Samsung said:

The Galaxy apps's language is depending on Samsung account's country if your Samsung account is Thailand so Galaxy apps is Thai.
So if you would like to change Galaxy app to english you need to sign in with another Samsung account(other country accont)
You can re-sign up Samsung account but don't use internet from Thai SIM card please use WIFI to Sign up then you can select the country for your new Samsung acount. If use internet from Thai SIM card the system will select Thailand automatically.

The answer doesn't quite apply to your issue (as they're talking about app language), but probably does confirm some phone functionality is based on the Samsung account origin.

Take a look at your Samsung account online and see if there is a way to BACKUP your phone data. Then see if the phone will allow you to log into (switch to) another Samsung account. Maybe most of the user data on the phone will remain and be inheritable to the new Samsung (UK-based) account.

One of the things I dread about smart phones is running into an issue where the solution involves a full Factory Reset.  Ugh.

Gopro, I did that (change sim names and icons), doesn't make any difference to the login screen - still shows home as Thai time.

Yes, that what worries me, so I've decided to give up - spent too much time on this already.
