MOPH to create more doctors and solve personnel shortage

NONTHABURI, 22 May 2017 (NNT) – The Ministry of Public Health (MOPH) has revealed four measures to solve the shortage of doctors, relying on the creation of more personnel to support the increasing demand in the healthcare system, says official.

MOPH Permanent-Secretary Sopon Mekthon has said the ministry is working to solve the shortages of healthcare professionals in Thailand by improving its workforce development, which will help improve the country's healthcare system.

The MOPH has come up with four measures, namely proper work-shift management according to each hospital's conditions, improved communication, initial support plan for affected persons, and the improvement of the emergency service system by requiring an emergency medicine doctor to be present at all times in emergency rooms.

The MOPH permanent-secretary has said he understands and cares towards the hardship doctors and healthcare officials face everyday in their efforts to provide the best services to the general public under limited resources.

The Ministry of Public Health is now increasing the availability of scholarships given for medical students who will work in rural areas after graduation, from 3,000 persons to 3,200 persons each year. The ratio of doctor to patients will be increased to one doctor per 1,250 patients within the next 10 years.

The Ministry is also working with the Medical Council of Thailand to take care of the newly graduated doctors with the 1-year skills enhancement program.

"...relying on the creation of more personnel to support the increasing demand in the healthcare system..."

Wouldn't it be better to adequately train professionals, rather than making a management move with the existing practitioners, and creating more by giving them a title if they are willing to work in undesirable areas, without developing the necessary skills?

Create Doctors?!

What does that actually mean?

MAKE? FABRICATE?

There are thousands of better trained Doctors, not Thai, that can do a far better job. But this being Thailand, are probably not allowed to fill such positions?

I'm surprised I'm allowed to clean my home, open a bottle of beer, use the TV remote..! (Sarcastic remarks)

But do those better trained doctors also speak Thai fluently?

It will be hard to communicate with patients if they both speak a different language.

Let's just hope that after the ' create " more doctors, those doctors will

work for the public sector and not run away to a private hospitals and

hi price clinics.....

I can't blame them, the private sector pays better and the working environment is much better.

The main reason doctors stay at public hospitals is either because they want to "do good" or because they want to live close to relatives and there is no private hospital around with job openings.

hmmm; that is NOT the case now ? guess i have been spoiled going to select private hosps

The specialisation of "emergency doctor" is relatively new meaning there are no specialists available in every hospital yet. That does not mean there is no doctor present.

In many western countries "emergency doctor" is not even a specialisation meaning you will always get a "normal doctor" doing the emergency shifts.

How do you create more doctors? is it a secret Thai recipe that you throw into a pot then a doctor comes out?

Yeah, the same recipe that's used to solve a lot of other issues too.

It's quite universal in it's method, a few different ingredients same result!
