After 25 years of existence, the Nation Sudsapda weekly newsmagazine will come to an end next week, mainly due to the digital growth that is heavily impacting print media.

The magazine is suffering from a decline in readership and rising production costs, according to a statement released by the magazine’s editorial team yesterday.

A change in the behaviour of media consumers was blamed for the decline in readership. In these days of digital news delivery, more and more people turn to social media, resulting in a constant decline of readership for newspapers and magazines, the statement said.

Nation Sudsapda, a publication of Nation Multimedia Group PLC, is the latest victim of a digital disruption that has led to the demise of many local magazines – some of which had previously managed to withstand various pressures for several decades.

The magazine itself has gone through a lot of political, economic and social changes over the past two-and-a-half decades, including the 1997 economic crisis that brought down numerous well-established businesses.

The magazine’s 1,305th edition – to be available next Friday – will be its last. The main article will cover the magazine’s 25 years of publication, according to a senior editorial staff member.

The final edition’s front cover will replicate its first edition of June 12-18, 1992, which featured Anand Panyarachun and his return as prime minister following a deadly pro-democracy uprising (seen below). At that time, the magazine was priced at Bt20, compared to Bt40 today.

Loyal readers of Nation Sudsapda may still follow its Facebook fanpage NationWeekend.

Fans of the magazine’s unique style of articles and news commentaries can enjoy that same content in Kom Chad Luek daily newspaper and on its website Komchadluek.net.

Current magazine subscribers will be refunded for undelivered copies.
