BANGKOK, 31 May 2017 (NNT) - President of the Thai Tuna Industry Association Chanin Chalitsaraphong has expressed confidence in the government's measures to tackle the IUU fishing over the past two years. He said the measures will likely cause the EU to issue a "green card" instead of a "yellow card" to Thailand.

The president also confirmed that members of the association do business with transparency and adhere to domestic and international regulations. During the past two years, the government updated and revised old laws to comform to international standards more and worked with all relevant sectors to solve the problem of IUU fishing in Thailand, said the president.

Furthermore, Mr. Chanin said he believed that Thailand's "yellow card" status might be improved by the EU following the government's past measures and close cooperation to tackle the IUU fishing with the private sector.

Regarding anti-human trafficking, the president said the association has cooperated with the government, NGOs and international organizations to fight against child labor, forced labor and human trafficking in business. The association has educated its members about how to operate in line with international standards and continuously inspected their work, said the president.

Meanwhile, executive of the Thai Frozen Food Association Phanitsuan Chamnanwet said the two associations always adhere to four principles to eradicate the IUU fishing in Thailand, including academic and scientific information; international laws, transparency and accountability; and cooperation.

werent these  the same ones that were crying because the new measures would cost them money and demanded to be allowed to continue fishing as they were. Maybe being forced to follow the new laws was much better for them than they thought, this is a lesson for all those fighting new regulations, they are there for a reason, stop crying over profit losses, help the country become more modern  by accepting them, what was allowed 50 plus years ago doesnt work now.

I doubt much have changed in the way the Thai fishing industry operates, if EU gives them a green card I think it will be a big mistake. Never seen fishermen like them before, no respect for the nature at all, all their trash they just dump in the sea, even when the change engine oil, the old oil they just throw in the sea. A lot of trash I seen floating around and washed up on the beaches here comes from the Thai commercial fishing fleet.

Just must look the mackerel (SABA) what they sale in Lotus. From year to year they are smaller.
In 3 years the fishermen are crying again: "No fishs in the gulf of Thailand. And the Indonesians confiscate our boats!!!"
