The water off the southern end of Phuket's Karon Beach remained brown all day yesterday (June 7). Photo: Tonya so say / Facebook

PHUKET: -- The Chief of the Karon Municipality Public Works Division has dismissed any notion that the brown water swirling off the south end of Karon Beach yesterday (July 7) was the result of wastewater discharged into the sea.

Instead, Chief Wanchai Saetan says the discoloured water along the beachfront was “natural”.

“It is not about wastewater. It is only plankton, which happens every year in the (southwest) monsoon season,” Mr Wanchai said.

“The geography of Karon Beach is conducive to allowing this to happen, and some people are suspicious of other reasons, such as wastewater and the oil (from boats), because they never have seen it before. It is just red plankton floating on the surface,” he added.

And plankton booms are associated with the discharge of wastewater and fertiliser...

But I guess this problem has been happening for generations, and thus has become a natural Thai thing...

Some transparent testing of the water could go a long way to clear up queries about the source.

No need, the "big chief" of the Public Works division assures everyone its quite natural in this area :cheesy:

I've seen these blooms in the middle of the ocean, hundreds of miles from the nearest land.

Though, this bloom right next to the shore is suspicious, to say the least.

Water testing at the beaches still happens, it's just that they don't publish the results anymore........also suspicious.

Are you talking about the 125.000 cubic meter of wastewater per day Phuket discharges to the sea?

Keep repeating the same story, and eventually some will begin to believe it.

There's just so much crap going into the ocean in Thailand, (Phuket 125,00M3/day as above mentions)..any brown water around the island resorts to me, ain't algae or plankton bloom!

All is ok. Its just natural sewage. Swimmers should enter underturd.

Explain to me again, like I was a five year old, or a golden retriever, why I keep getting called a troll when I refer to Phuket's west coast beaches as a biohazard.

Our Oceans, Rivers and Lakes have been used as septic tanks, waste disposal for hundreds of years.

Warming ocean temperatures increase bacterial growth, chemicals poison the resources needs by many who depend on the Sea for food and a living.

Spend that weapons budget on cleaning up our natural resources or they will soon be gone.

Finally, a well drafted and clearly articulated post on Thai Visa.

Thailand's disgusting beaches or should I say sewage ponds
