Us Born Thai With 2 Last Names. What Do I Do?

Featured Replies

I never thought I'd come back here. I never thought I'd like it here and end up staying here for 9 years. Now I have grown to love this place and love someone I've met here and intend on living here longer.

That brings me to a slight dilemma since I entered on my US PP which is now roughly 2 years over stayed and fast approaching expiration. Originally I came on a student visa that was renewed yearly by my university so I had no problems the first 2 years. Then I had a four year mental vacation that resulted in a 20K (4 yr overstay) fine at Don Muang in 2004. (BTW That Y2K party was really fun.)

That visit to the US was just to see my family and I came back with a new visa and everything and had the university get me a year extension again. But I started the paperwork to try and get my Thai ID back during this time since I was enjoying it here very much so far.

There was much hassling at the district office over who I really was. My mother had divorced my father before I was born and moved to the States. Thus I was born with my father's last name which ended up on my mother's family house registry here.

3 yrs later she remarried but forgot about filling out the necessary papers to change our names here in Thailand. (After the divorce I don't think she intended on coming back.) Nonetheless we both have different last names between our Thai papers and our US papers.

Since my mother wasn't here to help clear the name situation, my relatives decided to 'omit' the part me having my stepfather's last name or having a totally different US ID for that matter. After a lot of jumping through hoops I finally got my Thai ID card... just as my visa reached its 3rd month overstay. I was so relieved that I could no longer be kicked out of Thailand that I didn't think of the consequences.

So my question for you now is:

  1. What do I do about renewing my overstayed PP which is under a different last name from my Thai ID papers?
  2. Do I have to worry about the US Embassy notifying the Thai Immigration if I try renewing here?
  3. Where do I have to go and what do I have to do to change the last name of my Thai ID?
  4. How do I go about making a Thai PP to go renew US PP over there?
  5. Should I just forget about ever leaving the LOS?

Any helpful comments and suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Thank You,

You should be able to renew (or start fresh) your passport at either the USA Embassy in Bangkok or at the USA Consulate in Chiang Mai. Normally they just need to see the old passport, but don't know if it's the same for pp's that are expired that long.

I'd suggest calling them and asking. Keep pushing the numbers until you get to pp renewal or someone in American Citizen Services.
