Cooking School Or Chef Training For Thais

My bf (Thai) and I are moving to BKK and he is interested in going to cooking school/becoming a chef. A brief internet search just lead him to schools where learning one curry costs like 10,000 baht! He has a little experience in restaurants but needs overall training. He would also like some kind of certificate or degree. Just wondering if anyone has heard of anything like this.

Thanks!

I've been down this road earlier this year with my girlfriend and our requirements were very similar - a decent school that covered all aspects of cookery and some form of formal qualification at the end of it. There are lots of "private schools" which over advertise and cost the earth but seem to us to be little more than a waste of time and money. The Universities offer four year degree courses in Hospitality and Hotel Management which are four year degree courses of which cooking is only ten per cent of the curriculum. There is a private college in Bangkok called Dusit College of Culinary Arts and you can find them on the web. They are a private college owned by the Dusit group of hotels and their curriculum is impressive - two tier pricing for Thai's and Farangs where the Farang cost is about 120,000 baht per semester and the Thai price is about 35,000! If you go down that route you will need to read the small print because there are lots of catches. They have additional daily and weekly charges for all manner of things which you wouldn't expect and these cause the per semester fees to at least double. Additionally, it is a requirement of the course that each student put in something like ten weeks a year at a college nominated Dusit or Princess hotel and students are not paid for this work. The college campus is shabby and is located next to a Dusit group hotel so I kinda think the school was an after thought of the hotel construction process but is a great way for the hotel group to get free labour for its kitchens.

We finally gave up on the above and instead opted for practical experience. My girlfriend landed a great job with an American owned/run restaurant and has moved up through the ranks rapidly both in terms of experience and income and her cooking skills have improved dramtically. Good luck and let me know if you find anything worthwhile.

Wow thats great thanks so much for the information. We looked on the net and found Suan Dusit international culinary school but we couldnt find any information on semesters it just looked like you learn per curry or per course. It also said that you need to be experienced but I am thinking this is more advanced courses. Sent them an email so will see if we get a response. We are in Korea right now so can't go see them but will try calling them. Thanks again you were really helpful.

I think you may have the wrong web site - try www.dusit.com where they list the curiculum.

Chiang mai, Cheers thanks for that!

Ta22- I agree with you, my bf is very passionate about cooking but as he is about to marry and start a family he is looking to beome more qulaified in what he does. This may very well be by getting a job in a kitchen or going to school we are just exploring his options.

I have heard something good about Dusit, too. But at that time I didn't pay attention to it. I think you guys are pretty happy about that website now.
