BANGKOK, 23 June 2017 (NNT) – The Department of Mineral Fuels (DMF) has hailed the Cabinet’s decision to allow land marked for farming to be used for other purposes, including oil prospecting, believing that with 7 companies already ready to begin drilling, the nation’s crude oil production should return to normal rates within a month.

DMF Director-General Weerasak Puengrassamee has voiced belief that allowance for farm land to be used for other purposes will take effect within this month, after which Thailand will be able to return to its crude oil production rate of 28,000 barrels per day.

He explained that an earlier order to cease petroleum production on concession land for 20 days cut supplies from up to 7 producers and caused a financial loss of 1 billion baht to the private sector and 125 million baht in the public sector. The stoppage also wiped away 75 million baht in local earnings.

The government has since employed Section 44 of the interim constitution to clarify the relationship between petroleum producers and state land. The latest move requires all companies to re-register for use with the DMF to coordinate management of the lands alongside agencies such as the Forestry Department and the Department of Civil Works and City Planning.
