BANGKOK: -- The Industry Ministry is in the process of issuing an order to suspend the operations of the Charoen Pokphand Foods (CPF) plant in Bangkok, following a tragic death of five people at the factory on Friday, a ministry spokesperson has said.

Deputy permanent secretary Nisakorn Jungjaroentham said on Saturday that officers from the Water Technology and Industrial Pollution Management Bureau and the Department of Industrial Works had investigated the cause of accident.

Five people, including a female university student and four employees, were killed on Friday in an accident in the wastewater sewer system at CPF in Bang Na district.

A press conference on the accident by the Department of Industrial Works was scheduled for Monday, she added.

Meanwhile, Labour Minister General Sirichai Distakul ordered the Department of Labor Protection and Welfare to immediately provide assistance to the victims.

He has also urged the Social Security Office to make sure that CPF employees were eligible for its protections and are compensated by the Social Security Fund.

The public safety standards, or improvement of such, is truly a blight on this tiny man's record as leader of this nation. There has been absolutely no effort made to improve public safety, industrial safety, or traffic safety. As I have been saying all along, it is all about protecting industry, the elite, those in power, the wealthy, and the connected. This does not have anything to do with the common man. He or she is completely left out of any consideration. That is just the way the small man rolls. It is his M.O.

Close the place down for good. Five lives should be worth a few heads rolling at the least.

Geezer

Sure, shut it down and put hundreds (thousands?) out of work.  And still not get to the root cause for lessons to be learned that could be implemented in other similar facilities around the country.

Chop some heads, sure.  Those who should have been responsible for safety (but weren't).  But don't punish the rank and file for the incompetency of the few.

The big problem is that none of the people in the management of this factory will be charged or fired.

As many people comment, it is Thailand, and corruption and power go hand in hand.

Geezer
