Thai authorities shot two Cambodians, including a soldier, last week after they crossed the border in Oddar Meanchey province’s Trapaing Prey commune to log wood illegally in Thailand. Commune police chief Hing Thoeng said the two men were part of a group of nearly 20 illegal loggers who were sneaking across the border via a corridor along the Dangrek mountains.

“Two Cambodians were shot, one a 17-year-old man who was shot twice, once in the right leg, and once in the arm,” Mr Thoeng said yesterday. “About ten others managed to escape back into Cambodia.” “The group crossed onto Thai soil through the mountains,” he added. “There are a lot of Thai soldiers up there, standing by to protect the border.”

Mr Thoeng did not identify the 17-year-old victim, but noted the other man shot was Oeun Kimsan, a 27-year-old border soldier with the Anglong Veng Military Sub-Region Unit. Mr Thoeng said Mr Kimsan was shot in the arm and managed to return to Cambodia and seek help at the Trapaing Prey commune police office.
