Pheu Thai lodges petition with ombudsman over national strategy, reform laws

BANGKOK: -- Pheu Thai’s Ruangkrai Leekitwattana on Monday submitted a petition to the ombudsman, asking it to examine whether the passage of the two critical laws of national strategy and reforms is constitutional and make its proposal to the Constitutional Court.

He said he exercised his rights to do so under the constitution.

The two new laws are addressed in the charter, which came into effect on April 6.

The National Legislative Assembly passed the laws on Thursday, but Ruangkrai questioned the process to do that.

He claimed that the government submitted the draft bills to the NLA two days before the charter came into effect, while the charter clearly stated that the law enactment for these two bills must start shortly after the charter’s promulgation.

The two bills, if promulgated, would pave the way for the long-term development strategy, implemented for at least 20 years.

The national strategy bill has been heavily criticised by political observers, who claim that it would result in top military brass occupying the national strategy committee along with representatives from other sectors, raising the fear that the national strategy would be dominated by the military.

However, the lawmakers said only about one-fifth of the committee would be made up of military officers, so there was nothing to fear.

There would be 35 officers on the committee.

Charter was promulgated the same day as passage for the two laws.

Hardly a clear abuse of power which by the way the NCPO has a constitutional right to do so under both the Interim Constitution and the 2017 Constitution.

Maybe the Ombudsman should offer to reply once he gets a reply to the repeatedly ignored questions asked of Yingluck and her number one cousin. They've been waiting several years now for a reply.

Maybe PTP's leaders response time is indicative of the time they can expect an answer back?

No longer interest of the ombudsman. The courts are now asking for him.  http://www.nationmultimedia.com/news/national/30318184
