BANGKOK, 30 June 2017 (NNT) - The Royal Thai Army has held a special lecture on nationalism to instill patriotic feelings among different groups of citizens.

Presiding over the activity, Army chief Gen Chalermchai Sittisart commented that political and social problems, disunity among different groups of people and threats to the royal institution had undermined the nation’s security, adding all sectors should therefore promote patriotism among Thai people.

The lecture featured guest speakers from the Special Warfare Command, Army Air Defense Command and First Army Area. Topics included the history of Thailand and the Royal Thai Army’s ideals. Those in attendance included state officials, college and school students and members of civil groups.

Surely an armies job is to defend a countries interests, not get involved in politics.

Oops stupid me,for a minute i forgot where i was.

Time for a fact finding mission to Crimea, Srebrenica, Armenia,...

How about encouraging choice. If you wanna stand under a flag and salute it, that's up to you. It's not exactly a difficult thing to do.

If, like my missus, you just wanna be left alone to work hard and enjoy 'your' life, then so be it.

For all the 'good' people who spout off about how much they love their country and how good and moral they are, this isn't what good and moral people do. It's what narcissists do and they're usually doing it to divert attention away.

Somtimes, the easiest way to do good things is to simply not do bad things.

Has anyone bothered to point out that the greatest threat to the institution is people who carelessly invoke it to justify pursuing unpopular, draconian political programmes? Probably not!

Different groups of people hum sounds more like an operational briefing.  Is the Army is going to be deployed to round up those who haven't embraced Prayuth and willing to devote their lives to him.  Is it the role of an Army to tell people what and how to think, is it their job to stifle opinions of its countries citizens.

A lecture on NATIONALISM to promote PATRIOTISM doesn't quite make sense. The two are quite different.

A description of nationalism V patriotism.

There is some difference between the two when it comes to the way in which a nationalist and a patriot think. A nationalist believes that his country is better than any other country whereas a patriot believes that his country is one of the best and that it can advance in many fields with effort and hard work.

Army chief Gen Chalermchai Sittisart commented that political and social problems, disunity among different groups of people and threats to the royal institution had undermined the nation’s security,

So really the General is talking about nationalism and their little lecture has nothing to do with patriotism.

George Orwell once commented.

Nationalism gives a feeling that one’s country is superior to another in every aspect and hence it is often described as the worst enemy of peace.

 but not shocked as it has been background music both in sound and text for a while.

That is exactly what Hitler did by using the Jewish people as a scapegoat.

The way they treat us here makes me wonder if we will become Thailand's scapegoat.

The stage is surely right for this...

Patriotism is a love of one's country, nationalism is a hatred of other countries.

I think the scapegoats are already identified as those outside Bangkok, the farmers and other little people.  The us and those that don't admire us.

Er... ahem... shouldn't they be out defending the country?

But they are! Their paranoia along with their military culture makes them feel the need to defend the country from an imagined enemy within.

Defending the country from the outside rather than from within requires something special. It's called courage!

This is why the Shins and their supporters are Prayuth's biggest asset, without the Shins he and his Junta are nothing.

Front rank, third from left is idle - sleeping through the lecture. Lock him away Colour Sergeant!

Topics included the history of Thailand and the Royal Thai Army’s ideals

1st topic: how to successfully snatch a plaque

2nd topic: how to avoid being called "plaque snatchers"

3rd topic: Bomb Detectors, Chinese Subs and Rajabhakti Park - we are the experts

Nationalism breeds rampant Patriotism which in turn stigmatises anyone who disagrees with their ideas as 'enemies' . It is the perfect and shortest route to repression and eventually genocide as anyone who disagrees with the government mindset is labeled an 'enemy of the state'. All genocidal instances in history start with a division of society into the 'Patriots' and the 'Traitors' and ends up in mass repression and human atrocities.

I hope the following topics weren't left out:

1973 Student Uprising

Thammassat University massacre

1992 Black May

All some of the military's finest work

Geez i heard it all now  Guess you have to do something with all the Generals on the payroll
