Heavy waves drub Gulf of Thailand

BANGKOK: -- Continuing drubbing by a series of 2-3 metre-high waves along the upper southern Gulf of Thailand provinces has led the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) to urge New Year's revellers to monitor weather forecasts before heading for the water, TAT said Sunday.

Violent waves are still breaking across the regions beaches in Surat Thani and Chumphon with waves as high as three metres, TAT said, adding that people who planned to travel to the region to celebrate the New Year should monitor weather forecast closely.

Regarding security measures, it said checkpoints have been set up on highways while rescue workers are patrolling both land and sea areas regularly to help tourists in case an accident occurs.

The TAT advised revellers to travel to eastern resort provinces-- including Rayong and Chanthaburi, because hotel rentals and food are relatively inexpensive, the weather is pleasantly cool and the sea is not rough.
