PATTANI: -- A state intelligence officer saved the lives of a Pattani family of four on Sunday afternoon when he chased off a pair of gunmen shooting at them in their pickup truck.

Officials believe the attack was related to the ongoing unrest in the deep South.

Captain Raksak Chaikij and his driver were travelling on Thung Yan Daeng-Mayor Road when they heard gunshots. Rushing to the scene, they saw two gunmen walking towards the pickup to fire more shots.

Raksak drew his weapon and opened fire. The gunmen jumped on the backs of two waiting motorcycles and sped away.

Inside the truck, Kittisak Donpon, 55, and his son Apiwich Donpon, 38, were both seriously injured. Apiwich’s wife and young son, sitting in the back, were unharmed.

The victims said they were on the way to visit relatives when two men riding pillion on the motorcycles shot at their vehicles repeatedly.

Kittisak and Apiwich are being treated at Pattani Hospital.
