Do they check your return ticket date? I'm planning to buy a 6 month ticket to BKK and travel to other countries during that time. I see it says i need to apply for a visa on the Canada thai visa site if now departing ticket.  I'm thinking to buy  a cheap air asia ticket then changing the departure date. But i can't imagine they would really check or am i wrong?

I see there is a tourist visa for 6 months multipule entry, also valid at date of issue so i would still have  a problem at the end of my trip.

$200 i guess i might get this seems like a wast if i don't spend that much time in Thailand.

With a visa in your passport you do not need to show a ticket out of Thailand, neither at the airline chick-in nor to Thai immigration.

If by "they" you mean the Thai Embassy in Canada where you are applying for the Multiple-Entry Tourist-Visa - each Thai-Embassy enforces the rules differently.  I would ask them if using a return-ticket with a date near the end of the proposed-visa's validity would be OK.  I suspect it would be, provided all other qualifications (proof of over the minimum-money in the bank for 6-mo, proof of a job, etc) are ok - but call and ask to be sure.

I was under the impression this was a new rule but i guess it has been like this for years. Funny i never knew about it and never was asked for a return ticket.

As Maestro says, with any prearranged visa you'll be fine.

Biggest risk may be the airline from Canada insisting on either a visa or a flight out before they board you (depends on the airline). Even if they do make a problem, as long as you have enough time (and an internet connection) to make a booking on your phone to depart Bkk within 30 days, you should be good to go.
