Agriculture incomes up on better weather

BANGKOK, 12 July 2017 (NNT) – Favorable weather conditions have supported agricultural production this year with income for farmers during the first half of the year found to be up by 15 percent.

Office of Agricultural Economics (OAE) Secretary-General Chariya Suthichaiya has reported the farmer income index for the first six months of this year, noting a 15.01 percent rise in the figure compared to the same period last year. The increase has been directly attributed to higher output from farms due to the end of drought conditions. The heightened output also came at a time of improving prices for many farm goods with mangosteen, durian, rice, rubber, lychee, oil palm and shrimps all up in value.

The trend is expected to continue during the latter half of the year if weather conditions remain stable and the global economy continues its recovery. Produce expected during the second half of the year include tapioca, rice, para rubber and various southern fruits. The only concern for the sector is the fluctuating value of the Thai Baht, which the OAE is closely monitoring.

Good to hear that rubber prices bounced back so quickly.

Price of rice at the mill is still low, tapioca is at 800 bht a tonne when 1500 is breakeven, the guy opposite to us has just got 25% of the money he earned last year for his vegetable crop. It is a horrible time to be a farmer and stories such as the op are hard to believe.
