I would try to fly via London or Madrid to New York and from there to South America.

To London should be cheap and London has many cheap tickets to NY with lowcost carriers.

It shouldn't be too difficult to find a cheap ticket from NY to SA.

Good Luck.

I usually go BKK-Frankfurt-Sao Paulo.

Then in Sao Paulo, you can catch a flight to anywhere in South america.

The other option is to go via KL-Auck-Santiago.

If you go through Europe and then down avoid going through Caracas. It is the worst airport in the world staffed by terrible people. If you go there you'll know what I mean. Your luggage WILL get tampered with and you WILL be jerked around like there's no tomorrow. Not to mention they have taxes of about $140.

Correct avoid caracas.....bad news.

found a flight with saveflight.com to sao paolo/ return with stopover in Johannesburg on South African Airlines for 58600 RT...should be no problem to get any affordable flights to ecuador or Bolivia from there...but it ain't NY

I would go the Madrid-Sao Paolo way myself. I miss SA greatly. Enjoy it. Eat salteñas while in Bolivia.

absolutely recommended, best onna Sunday morning...look for a 'Saltenas Fuji' outlet...wash it down with copious amounts of Cerveza Taquina but careful drinking too much at high altitudes...you'ld rather be dead than have a hangover at 8000ft.

hrm i can not find anything cheap! my friend in the US who travels often to south america says prices will drop near end of march and that i should wait until then, can anyone confirm?

useta be that getting a domestic US flight to Miami (if you intend to stay in NYC before) and connecting with small SA carriers that depart from there was the cheapest way to go. You might want to look up Lloyd Aero Boliviano (sp?) the Bolivian national airline, from Miami to Santa Cruz then short hop to Cochabamba/La Paz for their flight schedules and prices...stops in Caracas and Manaus. The airport in Sta Cruz is a madhouse but so long as you view it as an adventure and not as a relaxing holiday, what the hey?...

American Airlines almost always has good deals to SA through JFK, MIA, ORD and DFW. Thai Air flies non-stop to JFK now, although that may not be the cheapest.

BKK-NRT-ORD on United isn't bad. Then ORD-DFW-SA on American could be pretty inexpensive this time of year.

Good luck.

If you are prepared to give NYC a miss, this flight starting with United might help... Cost about US$1900 return and pick up a cheap flight out of Mexico City to South American destinations..

6:40 am Depart Bangkok (BKK)

Arrive Mexico City (MEX) 10:30 pm Fri 19-Jan

Duration: 28hr 50mn United 838 / 888

Aeromexico 469

Connect in San Francisco (SFO), Los Angeles (LAX)

Total stops: 3

However, if you want NYC, then consider a Round the World ticket with Star Alliance (or several others)..

Cheers, Bapak

Sounds like a bitch of a journey, and similar to one that I'll have to do next year to Lima. Initially thought changing at Tokyo and LA would be the most efficient way to get there, anyone concur with this?

Also, if doing that, does a Thai national need a visa for the US if you're just in transit there?

Unlike most countries, you can't actually transit through the US, as you have to go through immigration, so yes a Thai national will need a valid visa.

There are flights from Tokyo to Mexico City (via Tijuana) with AeroMexico.

Hope of some help.
