351 people killed in road accidents in five days

BANGKOK: -- A total of 351 people have been killed so far and 3,970 injured during the first five days of Thailand's week-long New Year holiday, a senior Interior Ministry official said Tuesday.

Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department director-general Anucha Mokhaves said road accidents throughout Thailand during the period totalled 3,569, higher than during the comparable period last year. The number of deaths and injuries was also higher than last year by four and 95 persons respectively.

Most accidents resulted from drunken driving and speeding, according to Mr. Anucha.

As most businesses and government offices will open Wednesday, the flow of holiday travellers returning to Bangkok is expected to be unusually heavy, with more police checkpoints on the highways to prevent accidents from occurring, he added.

351 killed in road accidents in 5 days - who cares?

3 killed in Bangkok bombings - 31 pages of responses...

It's relative to economy, right?

I think death in road accidents in New Year and Songkran is something people already expect since it happens every year.

But the bombings were unusual.

Just to put it all in ex-pat perspective the equivalent fatality rates would be (with some gross rounding of figures)

US 1,755 (35 per state)

UK 351 (approximately same population as Thailand)

Oz 117

Canada 175 (approximately half the population as Thailand)

I see the maniacs driving every day, not impressed. As for the bombs, that's another story. :o

I take this numbers with a ”grain of salt”

Nation had a few weeks back a story about “fixed” fatality numbers under the last regime. Done to make people believe the Governments succeeded in their way to handle the law enforcement on the roads.

When thinking about it the numbers usually was more up near a four-digit number before Mr. T came to power. :o

To get this numbers down to less than half in five years would have been impossible unless the law enforcement in the traffic had changed 360 degree.

Which it not really looks as it has, and personal experience is that behave and attitude on the roads only have got worse. :D
