aussiestyle1983 Posted January 2, 2007 Posted January 2, 2007 My wife and I will be flying to Texas from BKK during the begining of June. After a 2 month stay in Texas we will fly one way to Sydney, Oz to live permanetly. Any advice on what airlines give good deals? Would it be cheaper to fly from BKK to USA return then one way to Sydney from BKK, or just fly on the one ticket from BKK to SYD, allowing a stop in the USA? We have no idea on how to go about getting a good deal, but once her US visa is issued, we plan to book the ticket as soon as we find a good deal............... Any idea on how much this would cost or a good place to purschase the tickets from? any info or advice would be apprieciated.

I would suggest that you look into a BKK > USA > Sydney > BKK ticket purchased in BKK. When you get to Sydney you can cancel the ticketed departure date from Sydney to BKK. Most tickets are good for one year. You can then use the Sydeny > BKK leg on your first trip back to Thailand. Then when back in BKK you can buy a round trip ticket BKK > Sydney > BKK.

You might consider flying to Sydney first and then doing a round trip to Texas. One way can be almost as much as round trip so you might save a lot by doing one way on the shorter segment.

You could also consider a Circle Pacific fare (http://www.staralliance.com/en/travellers/fare_products/circle_pacific_fare.html) such as BKK/LAX//SYD and throw away the SYD/BKK coupon or use later (good for 6 months).. When visiting USA I often buy a Star Alliance Round the World ticket... works out cheaper than most other tickets... you could do something like BKK/LHR (London)/NYC/Texas/LAX/SYD and throw away the SYD/BKK coupon or use later (good for 12 months).. From memory, this ticket out of BKK is about Baht 60,000. Cheers, Bapak
scrunchielaura Posted January 3, 2007 Posted January 3, 2007 You might look into an "open-jaw" ticket. In the past I've flown from A to B, and then returned home C to A (arranging my own transportation between B and C). This counts as a round trip ticket. I don't know if flying A to B, and then later B to C would count as an open jaw route. Even if it does, you have the complication of needing to find one airline that flies to all three of your locations.

We have worked out that a BKK to USA return ticket is a little bit cheaper than a SYD to USA return ticket (to texas that is) So if we dont do the BKK to USA to Syd option, we would deffinently do the return trip to the USA from Thailand, on the way back we would visit family here for a short time then just fly one way from BKK to SYD. After reading the previous post I didnt realise the star alliance round the world was so cheap, I thought it would be at least 100,000 THB per person, so this option would deffinently be the go for that price. We dont care if we go straight to Australia from the USA or not, we just thought if it was only afew thousand more baht, to have a short little holiday in thailand on the way back before starting life in Australia would be nice. A friend of mine last July did a BKK to AUS (Austin Tx) return on Cathy and AA for total 44,000 THB, which seemed reasonable. So we have allowed (or at least hoped) we can get the two BKK USA return tickets for 100,000 THB total including taxes. Followed by about 40,000 for the 2 one way tickets from BKK to SYD. So our total budget will be aroung 140,000 from BKK to Sydney with a stop in the USA on the way. Do you think this can be done. If we can get star alliance round the worlds for 60,000 x 2 so about 120,000 total, we would deffinently do this option. We know we can always find a BKK SYD one way ticket for a good deal, but it just planning to the USA. So far we have found by doing a combination of EVA air from BKK to LAX, then Southwest Airlines from LAX to AUS, it will be cheapest ATM, but still over 100,000. We also have the option to land in either Austin or San Antonio TX, with Dallas the last option if needed, so we are flexible with airports. Thanks again for the input and any ideas apprieciated. Could an open jaw ticket be used say from a to b (bangkok to austin, tx) c to d (san antonio, tx to sydney) These two cities in Tx are only about 60 miles or so apart, so im not sure if an open jaw ticket has a minimum distance restriction that would need to be followed, between cities b and c. Is this option also cheaper?

IMHO, your best bet is going to be getting everything on the same ticket and using the codeshare/alliance. Star Alliance includes United Airlines, Thai Air, ANA, etc. OneWorld alliance includes Quantas, American, BA, JAL, Cathay, etc. My suggestion would be to call each of these airlines, tell them where you want to go and when, and see what price they can offer. Another suggestion is to fly on Tue, Wed and Thur, preferably Wed which tends to be the slowest day of the week. Going to Texas, I would lean toward the OneWorld because American goes straight to DFW from Tokyo. United also does the BKK-NRT-ORD leg on 747s, but that doesn't get you to Texas without another flight. Going through Japan is not bad because it tends to break the trip up, being almost halfway. Good luck. Safe travels
