Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha has ordered that all 300,000 known CCTV cameras nationwide be checked in order to increase overall security in the country.

With official support, both government-operated and privately-held cameras should be checked to ensure functionality and optimal operation. The cameras are used as evidence in crime cases and often the best source of information for police.

If more cameras are needed, agencies can ask the government for funds to buy them, reported Bangkok Post.

already happened; article back a few months indicated there was a desire for 40,000 more; interesting that a PM has to instruct people to make sure they work

The abysmal state of them became apparent after the Erawan bomb: IIRC, 50% not working, a big gap in coverage of what happened.

If the CCTV is used in conjunction to apprehend genuine criminals, fine...

If they are used just to trap and immediately "fine" a lone farang tourist who absentmindedly throws a cigarette butt on Sukhumvit road, then it would be just another disguised racket....

(and please I do not approuve of people throwing their cigarette butts on the street!)

:cheesy::cheesy::cheesy::cheesy::cheesy::cheesy:

The government wants the cameras, not the Thai Police. Since when did the Thai Police seek to do anything except serve the wealthy and influential?

IF they're used to catch some farang dropping a cigarette butt then success is claimed on 2 fronts:

1. People still smoke and promote the 'smoke' industry... as opposed to the 95% safer vaping opposed by the riches arising from the Tobacco and Health industries.

2. They managed to make it work - from my experience, even if there are members of the RTP sitting and watching (and not specifically assigned to 'catch smokers') then they react as if both the people and the smoking is completely invisible.

And all the ones they supposed installed in Pattaya, well, nobody knows the % of working or not working.  "Install" seems to have different meanings in Thailand "same same but different".  Mount on pole, do not plug in.  Installed.  Mount on pole, plug in, but do not connect data cable.  Installed.

Don't forget Koh Tao. And make sure the records cannot disappear after the next crime

From the translated transcript of the Koh Tao verdict: The Second deceased was found walking into the AC Bar with her friends at 00.15 hrs, whereas the Second Deceased walked into the AC Bar at 02.08.37hrs. Thereafter, both Deceased were never found walking out of the Bar until their bodies were found.

Who is actually monitoring all these cameras? If Somchai wasn't sleeping or <deleted> off to the beach area cameras they would know most aren't operational.

So the CCTV did not work when they left the bar. May b e (just may be) followed by the murderers)

It was stated that most of the CCTV recordings  were not available. In particular not for the defense.

Not so interesting.. its how Thailand works. Buy something at inflated price and get your cut.. but then there is no money to maintain it as you can't take too many cuts on that. Its a serious problem here.  Also in BKK there were a lot of  "fake" camera's. Now that the PM instructed people they have been warned.

Yea... buy them at inflated price.. then don't do any maintenance as skimming form that budget is hard.

If people start checking the cameras, there’s a risk they’ll discover the additional added device to shut down and erase unwanted footage on the PC via remote control.

How do Thai people "check" a CCTV camera thats placed 4 or 5 metres up a pole.......will there be a supply of ladders made available at the closest 7/11?

pitiful, in addition to the cameras being selective, the translated transcript looks pretty low grade

It was paid for by contributions from supporters of the B2. I suspect the report was pretty low grade and the translation is as it is.

CCTV not working? Only when it is convenient. But then it's been reported that the Tsunami Early warning systems are not working. Short memories of the thousands who died and the installation of the early warning systems to help prevent a recurrence . It would seem these knee jerk purchases are made without allowance for maintenance. How can we stop so called Thai bashing when these stupid acts of negligence are reported. The bashing is not because we dislike the country, but the contrary. It's because we love it and don't like seeing it being ridiculed because  of laziness and gross inefficiency.:post-4641-1156694606:
