Wall collapse leads to serious flooding in downtown Sukhothai

SUKOTHAI: -- Authorities scrambled to save homes and business as water from a holding pond flooded several main arteries in Sukhothai yesterday evening.

A wall collapsed sending water form the Yom river over Ratchathani, Rat-uthit and Winitchai roads to a depth of 30 centimeters.

The three meter wide rupture - not secured with strengthening metal strips - gave way around 5pm. It was behind the temple of Wat Thai Chumphon in the Muang Sukhothai Thani district.

Local authorities brought in "big bags" to stop the torrents and began pumping the water back into the river.

Thai Rath said that the operation had met with some success.

Metal in our wall? Reinforced concrete? No need. Mai pen rai.

You no understand Thai cement.

I guess someone wanted to skim some money and made some shortcuts building this wall.. NOT secured with strengthening strips (rebar ?) How i wish they would hold people who make such decisions accountable.

There is a dam nice small resort type hotel behind that wall where I have stayed a few times.  Last time there, I actually joked with the owner about how much trouble he would be in if that wall every broke or gave way.  His response?  "Oh, Thai wall strong.  No break."

Ohhhh, really? lol

Big bags of sand, too funny.
