Authorities in Banteay Meanchey province on Tuesday raided two guesthouses, arresting more than 200 Chinese nationals involved in internet phone call scams to their homeland. The Interior Ministry’s immigration department and a provincial court prosecutor led the raids, enlisting the help of local police in Poipet town.

Poipet town police chief Thin Sideth confirmed the operation, but declined to discuss details and referred further questions to ministry officials. Khun Sambo, deputy director of the Interior Ministry’s Immigration Department, said the Chinese nationals arrested were involved in Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) scams.

“We arrested more than 200 people,” he said. “They are of one nationality, which is Chinese. They were involved in VoIP scams.” Mr Sambo said materials confiscated included desk phones and online gambling equipment.
