Sorry. I did not mean to imply they are all always full [you knew that, right?] but I will bet that they average far more customers at 10 baht... and make more money... Fixed routes would be helpful but so often they are empty that a chance to go off route should not be wasted. But really, "such a rip off" - that hardly seems valid for any motorized service that costs only 20 baht... try Phuket for a rip off...

One of the reasons I never go to Phuket any more.

The "rip off" refers more to the fact that few C M red bus drivers will accept 20 for a trip from a farang. If they did take 20 every time, I'd not be complaining.

I'm fairly confident that you'd manage to find something else to complain about.  :)

Fully agree on Phuket, but I never liked it there... my last time in CM, a few months ago, I had an older driver, tough guy, and I took him off route to pick up a friend, then we had to wait and try and find my friend - finally gave up - - I had a friend in the back and I sat up front to try and direct him... he was cranky and sort of funny - told me that he is so sour that even when he eats it is not delicious... due to all the hassle and that I liked him, I tried to give him 100 baht for the 2 of us... he absolutely refused. 20 each..

But as I say often here, if you proceed with a friendly attitude and a smile and if you can speak some Thai too, things go quite smoothly here.

I know I can only respond to what you actually say. Otherwise you would be upset I was responding to things you didn't say. It's easy, just say what you mean. Then we don't have to use a crystal ball which are expensive.

Baht buses are not always full. Sometimes a couple people, sometimes none. One evening I was the only passenger, then a Chinese tour guide stopped the driver to get him to take his tour to their hotel. The first Chinese in (a middle aged woman) shoved me to the side of the bench .

Since baht buses have a fixed route sounds like you are comparing dissimilar services. Would compare better to yellow/

They all have small families?  Thanks for letting us know.

funny guy - - you word pick me - and then when i write "most" of these guys, you change it to "all" - I am just trying to encourage some of the people here to be a little more compassionate in dealing with people... these guys are not driving these songthaews because they are millionaires - in baht or dollars...

Sorry to say this

Without a crystal Ball   How would we know

There is always the good and bad of all people in the world

If only they would understand plain English

Not overcharge

No one would say anything

These songthaews monopoly do what they want here

Compared to other places in Thailand

We all wish to live in peace and harmony

But unfortunately as soon as we are seen

Its open season for everything

^^^^^^how derisive can one be, or what a drongo,  better still just utter tosh

its only open season for the  punters who will not barter for the right fare, which is very easy and quickly done

last time E/S flagged a red songteaw was back in the middle of APRIL,  from the Iron Bridge (eastern side) to  Ram hospital mid morning,,E/S had a figure of at least 60 to 80 baht direct in his mind, well lo and behold, the driver said 40 baht, on the way we had a nice chat, and he offered to wait for for me at Ram( approx 30 mins),then drop me off at the Airport for a further 80 baht, deal done, and E/S  tipped  him  80 baht for his impeccable service and honesty, he was a hard working driver,as most of them are

a very nice mid morning to all

Are there any actual rules for the cost of a  journey ?

Is it 20, now 30 Baht anywhere , or for just short journeys?

Drivers refuse to take me from Tapae gate to the bus station for less than 50 Baht , usually more than that

Divers just shake their head and drive away .

When I taken the journey there without agreeing a price , they will not accept 20/30 Baht at the station , and then you have to come to an agreement there

If you do not like my posts you do not have to criticise

We are all entitled to post  Or are you the only that can have the last say

Maybe you need to look at yourself before criticising others

As many have said before,

You are so rude IMHO

Liz - yes, there are good and bad drivers and good drivers can have bad days and everything in between... I am not one who knows what all the fares should be in CM - - but I do understand fairness... there is time and gas & vehicle expense in trying to make a living - if there is a crowd in the songthaew, i likely will just pay the fare - if there are no other passengers, if there is traffic, if it is a long ride, if the driver goes out of his way - - I find it my duty to make sure the man who got me where I want to go is fairly compensated for the service...

HOWEVER!!! geez, come on - you say if they would only understand plain English... I will not be rude as I know you surely understand that you are in Thailand - they speak Thai - you are not dealing with high salaried, highly educated people. I am sure that is available if that is the service you require, but it will cost more than 20 baht... lots more.

I have seen tourists here and other people who are not knowledgable get into fights with tuk tuks and others and they were simply wrong and rude - and thought they were being cheated when they were just quoting prices that were no way near correct...

Knowledge goes a long way. Once you know the correct price or at least close to it on a negotiated fare... and that some fares are fixed and others negotiated... life will become easier...

Maybe learn some of their language - you are in their country - not yours [and wherever you are from - do taxi drivers speak Thai? Should Thai people there complain?]

B20 for normal runs with other passengers.

For long distances say across town then you will have to negotiate.

I go from Top of Suthep Rd to Mun Muang Rd for B20 if I sit in back and I pay B40 for front seat.

To return at night I offer B100 and thats always accepted.
