Not surprising coming from one of the world's most xenophobic racist countries.  So much for freedom of the press.

Again, may want to look up who's the minister quoted.

And threatening to shut down a single media outlet, while ought to be objected, is not quite the end of freedom of the press. AJ, by the way, is not "free press".

But it is free-er press or less unfree than most in the Arabic world.

AJ doesn't do in-depth coverage of issues unapproved by Qatar's government, issues deemed controversial as far as Qatar's policies go, contested domestic issues, or basically anything painting Qatar in a negative manner. And that's with reference to AJ's English edition, the Arabic one is even more heavily controlled.

When you talk about "free", it seems to be related to covering stories and issues pertaining to other countries in the region, as long as the presentation is in line with Qatar's goals and policies. There may be greater leeway to touch certain topics, but associating it with "free press" is misleading.

I am not against AJ as such. As far as Arab media outlets go, it's quite reasonable. All the more so when covering anything that does not relate to Qatar. My objections is with painting it as something that it isn't, and doing so in absolute terms.
