Lebanon's Hezbollah says U.S. can't hurt it, dismisses sanctions

BEIRUT (Reuters) - The leader of Lebanon's Hezbollah on Sunday dismissed the prospect of tougher U.S. sanctions against his group, which is backed by Iran, and said the U.S. administration had no way to harm it.

"The American administration, with all available and possible means, will not be able to damage the strength of the resistance," Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah said in a televised address to mark the anniversary of the end of Hezbollah's 2006 war with Israel.

Nasrallah said Lebanon was being subjected to intimidation and threats over Hezbollah - which is part of the Beirut government but classified as a terrorist group by Washington - and alleged that Lebanese officials had been told that Israel could launch a war.

European and American officials had warned them "during diplomatic meetings and international visits ... if you don't do this, Israel will launch a war on Lebanon, and if Hezbollah doesn't do this, Israel will launch a war on Lebanon", Nasrallah said. He did not spell out what had been asked of Lebanon or Hezbollah.

Tensions between Israel and Hezbollah, a well armed Shi'ite movement, have risen this year. Nasrallah has played down the prospect of a war while simultaneously warning Israel against a conflict.

Trump last month called Hezbollah a "menace" to the Lebanese people and to the entire region during a news conference with Lebanese Prime Minister Saad al-Hariri.

U.S. lawmakers last month introduced legislation seeking to increase sanctions on Hezbollah by further restricting its ability to raise money and recruit and by increasing pressure on banks that do business with it, though it was not clear when or if it would come to a vote.

Officials in Lebanon have raised concerns that any widening of the U.S. sanctions could damage their banking industry.

Right, Syria is next door to Lebanon. Those rebels in Syria, rebelling against Assad. Some of them rebels are against America and Europe. Hezbollah is actually fighting against some of the rebels who are against America and Europe.

If Washington wants to harm Hezbollah, surely, it would be a better idea to wait for Hezbollah to finish doing their stuff in Syria, and then, then go and strike Hezbollah ?

Actually, it might be an idea to give aid to Hezbollah, watch them remove the rebels in Syria, and then wait to see what action to take.

Yeah good idea, US supplies the Islamist terrorist wing of Hebozllah who are also one of Israels primary enemies, have planned terror attacks in the US, as well as planning and implementing terror attacks in other countries, including Thailand, worldwide - good thinking batman

Er, I think you might find the major terrorist attack in the US, 9-11, was actually carried out by Sunni Saudis, not Hezbollah Shiites. In fact most of the terrorist attacks worldwide are carries out by Sunnis, who are actually the enemy of Hezbollah.

Hezbollah actually doesn't really have issues with most of the West, just Israel over Palestine. We have essentially been sucked into a quasi war against Hezbollah on behalf of...Israel, seems like stupidity to me, let them fight their own battles, they have the nukes and a massive defense budget funded by the US tax payer. Never understood (OK well funded lobbyists) why the US offers its young men and women up for body bags for another state for something that has nothing to with its interests.

Thanks I am well aware of Sunni terrorist activities, but as the OP is talking to Hezbollah that's whom I am talking about. Hezbollah have planned and carried out terror attacks outside of the M.E , they are an ideological and physical threat to Western interests.

I'm trying to say, and I think Rancid is also trying to say, the Sunni terrorist activities have killed far more people in America and Europe, than what Hezbollah has done. Hezbollah is fighting against Al-Qaeda in Syria. Surely, it makes sense to back Hezbollah (a group who have killed far fewer people) to remove Al-Qaeda in Syria, bearng in mind that Al-Qaeda killed loads in 9/11. And Al-Qaeda, when in Syria, has renamed itself as the Al-Nusra Front, and this new name has itself been changed as well. But we all know, and Washington knows, it's still Al-Qaeda.

And after Hezbollah have removed Al-Qaeda in Syria, they might be interested in taking part in removing ISIS. And again, ISIS have killed far more (in America and Europe) than Hezbollah. So yes, reasons to support Hezbollah. That mass killing in the gay nightclub in America, the killer was inspired by ISIS.

Last time. Hezbollah's so called "military arm" are a known Islamic Shiite terror group who, among crimes worldwide, including transnational organised crime, have committed war crimes against civilians within Syria in collaboration with Assad forces.

To be blunt I am astonished you can post support for a terrorist group on this forum without consequence.
