A Dutch tourist has been admitted to Chiang Mai Ram Hospital after she fell down a ravine at Pai Canyon in Mae Hong Son’s Pai district.

The incident occurred after Renata Dykstra, 46, slipped and fell from a walkway on Monday evening.

Rescuers and troops arrived at the scene after Pai Municipality learned about the incident at about 6.30pm. Dykstra was rescued at about 7pm.

She suffered a back injury and was sent to Pai Hospital for X-rays and treatment before being sent to Chiang Mai Ram Hospital.

Pai district chief Thanakrit Chanthachamrassilp visited her at Pai Hospital at about 9.30pm.

Thanakrit said Dykstra was in good spirits.

She said she will return to Pai once she recovered, he revealed.

He said authorities will erect warning signs and fences at dangerous spots.

He said the woman might have slipped on gravel.

Pai Canyon has a mountain ridge which is a few metres wide and 200-300 metres long.

There are ravines on both sides of the ridge that are 10-30m deep.
