SONGKHLA — Police are hunting a group of men who raided a car dealership, shot at least one employee to death, kidnapped others and stole five vehicles Wednesday morning.

 

Six or seven men reportedly entered the Wangto Car Center in Songkhla province’s Na Tawee district at about 11am. They opened fire, killing an undisclosed number of employees. They stole five pickup trucks and forced four employees into the vehicles with them.

Truck theft in Songkhla leads to gunfight and explosion

A daring move to steal five pick-up trucks in Songkhla on Wednesday led to a dramatic series of events, including a hostage-taking, two shootings, a gunfight that killed one assailant, an explosion and the safe disposal of a bomb.
 

It started about 11am when a group of six or seven armed suspects raided the Wangto Car Centre in Tambon Na Thawi in Songkhla’s Na Thawi district and took the business’s four employees hostage.

 

Witnesses said the gun-wielding men in black arrived the car centre in a Mazda BT-50 pick-up truck. The four employees were rescued from Tambon Wang Yai, where they were reportedly taken to be shot and killed. Two of the workers managed to flee their captors, but the other two were shot and seriously injured. 

 

Security officers later retrieved at least four stolen trucks –- one of which was equipped with a bomb that was disarmed safely. Another truck exploded in Pattani's Nong Chik district.

 

Thai security officers hunted for the assailants and the stolen trucks, which they initially believed could be used in future attacks in the deep South.

 

One Mitsubishi truck, with licence plate Bor Chor 7182 Yala, was found abandoned on the side of the road after it ran out of petrol. 

 

Officers who chased another vehicle with licence plate Bor Thor 4063 Phatthalung, engaged in a gunfight at 2pm with an armed assailant who decided to pull over in Tambon Pak Bang of Thepa.

 

The gunfight led to the suspect's death. Officers found inside this truck a bomb attached to a cooking cylinder. The bomb squad was called and officers disarmed the explosive safely.

 

Another truck with the licence plate Kor Or 4995 Songkhla was found exploded at 2.28pm at a bridge in Pattani's Nong Chik district. 

 

Two other trucks were said to be installed with bombs. At the time of writing, one was heading to Pattani’s Yaring district and the other was spotted on a road outside Muang Yala as of production time.

AT LEAST two people are dead after the daring robbery of five pickup trucks in Songkhla yesterday which set off a dramatic series of events, including a hostage-taking, shootout, explosion and the safe disposal of a bomb.

 

It started about 11am when a group of six or seven armed suspects raided the Wangto Car Centre in Tambon Na Thawi in Songkhla’s Na Thawi district and took four employees hostage.

Provincial Police Region 9 chief Pol Lt General Sakhon Thong-munee said at 4pm yesterday that officers had retrieved one more stolen truck from Tambon Kuan Noree in Pattani’s Khok Pho district. They were still trying to locate another truck at press time.

 

The objective and motivation of the robbery remained unclear, but security officials said the suspected attackers might be operative insurgents in the predominantly Muslim region. 

 

The suspected insurgents might have wanted to make car bombs to orchestrate violence in the restive region, said Deputy National Police Chief Pol Lt-General Srivara Ransibrahmanakul.

 

 

The suspects were not identified. Srivara said one was reportedly shot dead by authorities and he confirmed that four vehicles had been recovered. 

 

Authorities have been struggling to contain the violence that has erupted in the deep South provinces of Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat since 2004 claiming more than 6,800 lives.

And so it goes on!   Well that seems to have had good handling by the authorities.  It could have ended with all staff dead  and bombs everywhere.  Very difficult situation that appears to have been rescued from a potentially very bad result.  Hope the two staff recover and the rest of the 5 or 6 miscreants are shot trying to escape.  Don't talk about prison.  I'm sorry but ideologist terrorists like this don't easily reform.   We need to put them where they can't do it again, ever.
