30 injured as boat capsizes at Ayutthaya

AYUTTHAYA: -- Rescue officials are searching for possible missing passengers after a ferry boat carrying as many as 100 persons, capsized in the Chao Phya river here Friday morning.

Passengers travelling on the ill-fated ferry boat were en route to a Muslim religious ceremony at a mosque here when the accident took place.

The boat capsized after most of the passengers moved to one side of the stern to avoid bright sunlight. The unbalanced boat began to take in water, and some passengers panicked, even jumping into the river as the

boat began to sink.

Initial reports said 26 passengers suffered minor injuries while two female passengers were in critical condition at a hospital in Ayutthaya.

Boat owner Nopporn Kittithummakul reportedly told police that his boat did not carry passengers exceeding the weight limit and that he would be willing to shoulder medical fees for injured passengers.

just incredible, can some one please tell my why these types of accident seem to happen only on this side of the world, i am no longer surprised when i read about boats, ferries, and ships tipping over, but for all the people to go to one side of the boat to get away from the sun just amazes me.

on my first trip to bangkok i wanted to take the water taxi, when it arrived i noticed that 3/4 of all the people were on one side of the boat and as the boat came toward the dock, it was tilted to one side, as it left the dock it was stll crooked, i couldn't believe that not one person of authority did not force the people to spread out.

when the next boat came in it was very even and i boarded it, is it really necessary for people to be told that danger awaits passengers who all go to one side of a boat, does logic only apply to some parts of this world and not to others, don't mean to sound so critical but for crying out load what were some of these people thinking

Whatever!, it seems that the "deaths" of a hundred or so people is not really all that newsworthy here in the realm. :o

Not a very bright way to deal with the situation.

Mind you if they had all rushed to the otherside, the boat would have gone over that way instead.

Where were the boats crew in all this??
