The Khon Kaen Provincial Court has released on bail one of the defendants in the highly publicised case of karaoke bar worker Warisara Klinjui, who was killed and dismembered in May.

The court released Jidarat Promkhun, 21, on the grounds that she was not a flight risk and the offence she was indicted for was not a serious crime. Jidarat was expected to be released at 6pm on Monday.

Jidarat was indicted by public prosecutors on only one charge of possessing a stolen item, linked to Warisara’s mobile phone, which she was allegedly given to sell.

Jidarat’s friends – Priyanuch Nonwangchai, 24, Kawita Rachada, 26, Apiwan Satayabundit, 28, and Wasin Namprom, 22 – were indicted for charges including pre-meditated murder, destroying and hiding body parts to conceal the cause of death, theft, illegal detention, carrying weapons (knives) to public places without a sound reason, possession of stolen items, and taking drugs.

Priyanuch became an Internet sensation after she was accused of the killing and dismemberment of Warisara, and fled to Myanmar along with Kawita and Apiwan.

Days later, the trio surrendered to Myanmar police, who transferred them to the custody of Thai police on June 3 to face charges. Wasin was arrested earlier in Laos and Jidarat was arrested in Bangkok.
