(Reuters) - Thailand is set to host a round of the MotoGP world championship for the first time in 2018 with a three-year contract due to be signed in Bangkok on Thursday, series organizers announced on Monday.

The official MotoGP.com website said that Carmelo Ezpeleta, chief executive of commercial rights holders Dorna Sports, would join Sakon Wannapong, the governor of the Sports Authority of Thailand, at the formal signing.

The race will be held at the Buriram circuit in the northeast of the country.

The track, which has previously hosted the world superbike championship, will be the first all-new addition to the series since Argentina’s Termas de Rio Hondo in 2014.

Rossi's already driven it. Says it's a boring circuit.

Well, the very odd thing is the general public won't be on the track at the same time.

Answering Baboon by the way.

Another edit, seems I was meaning to answer Father Fintin.

Not only that, Thailand regime should be ashamed claiming to tell that they want fewer deaths in Thai traffic when already the second deadliest in the world, such an event will make motobike deaths skyrocket

More than that, the Thai GOVERNMENT should try to lower deaths in traffic, not create more deaths

Rossi doesn't like it because there are long straights which will favour the Ducatis!

It's a shame so many young Thai men and women will go out racing their bikes and become another statistic among Thailand 26,000+ road accident fatalities per year.

It's irresponsibility of the highest degree having any sort of motor racing event here.

The only irresponsibility is the lack of law enforcement on the roads that would stop people racing their bikes.

Exactly, this is exactly what the thai boys wanna see and train for of course.

I see Buriram becoming the hub of motoracing where we can just do it where we like. Much more fun than cockfighting me thinks.

Looking forward to going
But can we have programs please. None at superbikes.
Move the crap big screen from in front of the stand. Let us walk around the perimeter of the track. The rest is fine(ish)

Why would this event create more deaths? I can imagine some idiots want to go faster, but I think they young ones already use their bikes to the limit. A lot of the deaths are caused by utter stupidity eg riding in the wrong direction on the road and navigating intersections without looking. I  don't believe an event like this will change anything. There are bike racing events T Burian circuit quite often the track is a great venue.

I will be going and i am hoping a few of my friends will be visiting Thailand and going with me and spending money while there over here. I fully expect there will be some crazy dirvers and riders on the road after it finishes making there way home.

You've got to question the wisdom in this given Thailand is number 2 in the World for motoring accidents and fatalities and the vast majority of those are from motorbikes.

Utter stupidity if you ask me.

It probably won't cause more deaths. Someone released the TV Drama Lama.

Stupidity by the present government is not an uncommon occurrence. Thailand is infamous for being number one in the world for motorcycle road fatalities. This event should certainly stir the lunatic street racing boys into a frenzy with even more young lives lost.

What are the dates for the race weekend?

Any tips on hotels close by.

Looks like he's out for a good while. Just broke his Tibia and Fibia so will miss a few races.

Can't imagine it being less than 6 or 8 weeks.

Still waiting for the F1 in Bangkok and the Tour de France starting in Thailand.

Sad to see all the negative comments for this utterly spectacular event.

MotoGP doesn't kill people, all you believers that now the accidents involving motorcycle riders will skyrocket, where do you get this?

Did this number skyrocket when World SuperBike was organized at the same venue?

Did this number skyrocket when MSX was organized in Chiang Mai?

Answer is no.

You simply didn't know it was held in the Kingdom before so your views need to be taken down a notch (or 2).

Looking forward to attend the most spectacular sporting event ever!

Late season , most likely October-ish to fit with the current Malaysian, Japan detours. Of course getting a dry race day in October will be a total lottery.

It will have no impact on fatalities due to accidents. That will remain the same. Motto gp is a great and exciting sport and will help issans, And Thailands economy tremendously. So grow up and put your big boy pants on!

You think monkey see, monkey do doesn't apply here?

You are posting from a purely self-serving and selfish point of view, because you like bike racing and want to see it in Thailand, without contemplating the bigger picture or the consequences of hosting and promoting such an event.

This will increase the numbers of motorbike accidents and fatalities guaranteed.

In fact I would go so far as to say this is irresponsibility unparalleled in Thailand, as one of the major problems they have is road accident fatalities involving bikes.

They should ban beer in Thailand. Beer causes most of the road accidents in Thailand. Its irresponsible to allow beer to be served in this country. It contributes to thousands of deathes every year on the highways!
