watcharacters Posted March 29, 2013 Share Posted March 29, 2013 I think the throwing of water at motor bikes on high speed roads should be banned in all of Thailand. As for throwing it from the back of pick ups what is the point if riding back there just allows you to be a victim to streets lined with people throwing buckets of water at you such as we get here in Chiang Mai. Why dont we just "BAN" Songkran alltogether. we are becomming a police state slowly but surely. Some politictions are paid to cover up the truth. Some are paid to confuse the public. Some are paid to sell new ideas and theories! Whatever the case, the bottom line is crowd controle. Yes because thinking of safety makes it a police state. Its quite ok to outlaw dangerous stuff like throwing water at bikes from pickup-trucks or just from the street. But hey don't worry it will never be enforced. Yes I agree water is very dangerous and should be banned during Songkran because it causes a lot of dirty people to become clean people.. I think those not so happy with Songkran are concerned about things other than dirt. And I trust you realize under certain circumstances, water can be very dangerous. Punish the police station, the superiors and everyone down if laws are not enforced. That would see the police get off their <deleted>, away from the TV's in their nice little beachside huts etc and for once do the work they are paid to do! All the ones i know of were drunks on bikes running off the road at night... Correct, its the booze not the water. Amazes me that some on here would ban the fun that only happens once a year. People travel from all over the world to visit Chiang Mai just for this event and there is far more people that enjoy it than moan about it. Yes, traditionally it started out differently, but the first person to tell me, what Easter has to with bunnies and chocolate eggs or what Christmas has to do with trees and Santa (I know the MEANING of these symbols, but where is the connection to the birth and death of Christ???), gets a beer! We also have festivals in the old country (Germany in my case) where people go nuts and drink way too much (Carnival or the October- Fest, to name just two) and road accidents go up during that time, because there are always idiots... But if you just educate people, if you teach them the simple "what...if..."- logic and if you just even half- hearted enforce the laws that are there, you don't have to come up with crap announcements, crap bans and crap articles every time. I guess you don't live in Thailand. I have seen many accidents caused by idiots throwing a bucket of water at a passing motocycle. Iced water is the latest stupid idea, and has an even worse effect. Last year I saw some idiot farangs throughing water with ICE CUBES. Complete and utter idiots. It's not just throwing water at moving motorcycles. I nearly had a very bad accident driving a car down a straight highway at about 90 kph, when all of a sudden a couple of kids darted out and threw two buckets of water that hit my windscreen. The force of water against my windscreen moving at 90 kph cause a huge noise and caused me to momentarily be unable to see do to the water. This sort of thing is very, very dangerous and could cause one to lose control, whilst killing themselves and perhaps other who may me standing along the side of the road. Throwing buckets of water at passing vehicles has nothing to do with the real meaning of Songkran, and of course I would be dreaming to think anything would ever been done to stop it. pgrahmm Posted March 29, 2013 Share Posted March 29, 2013 (edited) Not only motorbikes - last year I was driving my Toyota Vigo down 108 about 80 KPH and some guy jumps out from behind cover and blasts a full bucket right on the driver side of the windshield from about 10-15 feet straight blast from the bucket - no arc. He was not on a truck. I have seen people in trucks on the same road blasting motor bike riders while both are going down the road - to me that's a dangerous practice. Locationthailand Posted March 29, 2013 Share Posted March 29, 2013 I witnessed a motorbike at speed with a pillion passenger trying to avoid the water onslaught from rowdy youths in pickups near Tung Son (Nakhon Si Thammarat) some years ago. In trying to avoid the dousing, the copped the water full frontal which caused them to crash. No helmets, head first into the road and left their brains all spattered over the asphalt. Two lives wasted on a thoughtless gesture. A water pistol I can agree with, a bucket or larger at a moving vehicles is insanity. But there is no way this can be policed. The effort is good to promote safe driving, but with the lack of law enforcement its another useless thing. joboss Posted March 29, 2013 Share Posted March 29, 2013 start with banning people riding in the pickup truck bed unless it has installed seats and a roof year round, then next year ban splashing water from moving vehicles of any sort. human cargo in pickup truck beds is a hazard magnified by the songkhran drink driving splashing blasting season. Ohhh dear.... Back to the nanny state for you.... do not go outside without your PPE (Personal Protection Equipment) and be home before 10pm. salapau Posted March 29, 2013 Share Posted March 29, 2013 Seen last year in Mae Sariang during Songkran - Fire truck blasting water at everyone - Pick-ups with huge barrels on water on, with pumps and hoses absolutely soaking anyone walking or riding bikes - Older woman on motor bike shouting at group " NO WATER, " she was covered and very nearly came off the bike - Young woman leaving hair dresser on motor bike headed off in one direction, spotted the same group with hoses and buckets of water, started to turn around to go in the other direction, she didn't make it and was swamped from head to toe, she eventually headed off crying.
