Dowry/sinsod Question

Featured Replies

I had just written quite a hefty amount however I managed to press the back button or something which erased everything I had wrote. :) So, i am going to cut down what I wrote before a lot.

First, let me say that I am too young to even begin to think about marriage, so once again, it is because I want to learn.

What I wrote was, I had been reading up about thai culture things, and almost always sin sod comes up. Almost all websites say that sin sod is lost/reduced dramatically if the girl had been previously married, is not a virgin or has children with another man. When my girlfriend explained to me about sin sod, she said that this isn't the case in modern day. She said that she had witnessed marriages where the girl has a baby from a previous man, however still a lot of dowry was shown. What she basically told me contrasted with what I had read before, which is why I'm asking now. I should say that my girlfriend is from Bangkok, very modern and is only 20 years old, so her views might be different as she is younger, and times may have changed.

So my question is, is this the case or not? If the girl is not a virgin anymore, has kids already or married before, does this still have an effect on modern day marriages with sinsod/dowry? I know times can change, but from what I've read this is traditional and historic in Thailand, so surely modern day things shouldn't even come into it.

Also, now that I remember I had another question. If sinsod is to be given back in full, why would that even have an effect?

Thanks very much for any help. Once again, cut out and saved time with a lot of what I wrote before. :D

Hi mate,

I can only speak from personal experience, but my friend had a sin sot of 200,000Bt

I have agreed a sin sot of 50,000Bt

My friends wife was single, never married, no child lady.

My g/f is a single lady, married once with 2 children by different fathers!

Maybe this will help!

Having Children so they can sell them

thanks for the reply

sorry if i didn't write clearly but my question was really if modern times changed 'the rules', ie. If the girl is not a virgin anymore, has kids already or married before, does this still have an effect on modern day marriages with sinsod/dowry?

just wanted to learn cause my girlfriend's ideas contrast with what i read
