Forgetting all the ads on the web...

Does anyone have any sound advice on getting good, local, affordable medical cover?

I see so many ads for medical health cover promoting the mother of all covers, but does anyone know any truly good cover that covers good dental & medical cover.

I am currently in good physical health, but I am no longer 'immortal' as I once thought I was back in the days...well...Just back in the days!

If anyone has positive information on a local personal medical insurance cover, then it would greatly be appreciated.

I have coverage with BUPA and I'm satisfied with it although as yet, and fortunately, I haven't had to make a claim. You just have to check out the various plans available and decide what's best for you. You can start wilth BUPA. www.bupathailand.com

I went with IMG. It is a U.S. based company. They claim they are regulated by U.S. law, so I assume they are approximately up to U.S. standards.

You have to be outside the U.S. for at least six months of the year to qualify for IMG coverage.

It is cheaper than the insurance I had in the U.S. They said that this is because medical treatment outside the U.S. is usually cheaper.

Pre-existing conditions are accepted, but you have to be a member of the group for two years before they will pay for treatment for pre-existing conditions. And, I think there is a 50K (U.S. dollar) cap on the treatment for the pre-exisitng condition.

I have never filed a claim with them.

I believe they will work with Bumrungrad so that they will bill them directly. You need to get a letter from the insurance company first. I don't know what other hospitals they deal with directly.

I have two other friends who use them. But, they haven't filed claims either.

I haven't read the fine print yet but the fees seem reasonable.

These figures are for Aussies, just change the country from the dropdown menu for your country.

A broken leg op in Thailand will cost a minimum of 120,000B plus outpatient fees and further xrays etc.

Their Platinum plan covers just about anything, including pre-existing conditions, which was one of the things I needed.

Since I haven't signed up yet nor filed a claim, it remains to be seen how they perform. They are backed by Lloyds, which gives them some credibility. They've also gotten a good rating here:
