The newly installed water treatment pond on Phi Phi Don Island, which received more than 28 million baht budget from the Danish government, was the subject of complaints by business operators on the island who claimed that the pond is not of any use for them. The businesses stated that the contractor didn’t connect the waste water pipes from the hotels to the pond which resulted in bad smells all over the island. The complaints prompted Krabi Governor Siwa Sirisao-wa-lak, to inspect the pond and he found that the complaint was proved true. He then instructed the Ao Nang Sub-district Administration Organization to rectify the problem promptly to prevent any affect it may cause for tourism on the island.

Phi Phi Island addresses environmental pollution issues

The Chief Executive of Tambon Aonang Administrative Organization in Muang district of Krabi province, Mr. Pankam Kittithorakul (พันคำ กิตติธรกุล), says some business operators on Phi Phi Island did not connect their sewage pipes with the island’s water treatment system. Some hotels did not properly connect the pipes, causing blockage to the system. As a result, foul smell from the malfunctioned water treatment system covered many areas of the island.

Mr. Pankam says Tambon Aonang Administrative Organization is now tackling this issue, and it has also allocated a budget to build more water treatment system on Phi Phi Island. He says the officials have inspected the system and found many plastic bottles and lards that are blocking the pipes. Thus, the officials are making a mutual understanding with the business operators on the island on this matter.

Mr. Pankam says another environmental problem that needs to be solved on Phi Phi Island is garbage problem as certain business operators were inappropriately disposing their garbage in different locations. Besides, they later claimed that the waste materials belong to the Tambon Aonang Administrative Organization. He says legal actions will have to be taken because once the wastes are disposed into the sea; the marine environment would be greatly damaged in this popular tourist destination.
