Briton arrested on drug charges in Thailand

BANGKOK - A 35-year-old Briton has been arrested on charges of trying to smuggle 9,000 ecstasy tablets with an estimated street value of 5 million baht (70,400 pounds) into Thailand, police say.

Alan John Kiernan, who arrived in Thailand last night and was arrested while walking in downtown Bangkok, is accused of bringing the pills from Zurich.

If found guilty, he could face the death penalty.

"The pills were found wrapped neatly in a plastic bag and hidden in his sweat pants. They were specially made with several layers," one police officer said.

Police said Kiernan had told them he wanted to sell the pills to foreign clients in Bangkok.

That said, doesn't seem like we see enough of the big fish being prosecuted, just the idiot getting life.

"Shit happens"

Bare-chest costs Briton Thai drugs bust

BANGKOK (Reuters) - A 35-year-old Briton smuggled 9,000 ecstasy tablets past eight customs officials in Thailand before being stopped on the street the next day and arrested for not wearing a shirt.

"Shit happens," said Alan John Kiernan, who arrived in Thailand from Switzerland on Friday and made it through customs with the ecstasy haul -- worth 5 million baht (88,000 pounds) -- hidden in special panels sewn into his sweat pants.

If found guilty, he could face the death penalty.

Police said Kiernan, whose travel documents said he came from Southampton, had told them he wanted to sell the pills to foreigners in Bangkok.

"The pills were found wrapped neatly in a plastic bag and hidden in his sweat pants. They were specially made with several layers," one police officer said.

Paraded in handcuffs before television cameras at a police news conference, Kiernan confessed to smuggling the tablets but said he had only been caught because he was walking around a park topless while trying to phone his local contact.

"They didn't catch me at the airport," he told Reuters Television. "I got through eight customs without being stopped once.

"This morning that copper over there arrested me for not having a shirt on. The next thing you know, he's pulled out these ecstasy tablets," he said, pointing to his trousers.

He added he had taken a few pills himself and appeared to accept his fate relatively calmly. His only regret was not being able to see a bit more of the sprawling Thai capital, he said.

"I can't even get out to have a look around," he complained.

A British teenager, Michael Connell, was caught trying to bring 3,400 ecstasy tablets into Thailand in November. Connell, 19, who also faces the death penalty, pleaded not guilty in court on Monday.

Ironically, Thailand is considered to be one of the biggest sources of ecstasy tablets available in Western Europe.

That's unbelieveble!! :o

He'll soon regret his actions. I think it's about time Thailand executed a Farang and show it live on television. Not Micheal Connell as he's 19 and deserves a second chance in life, but if they did execute a Farang then it might send out a clear message that drug smugglers/Trafficers will not be tolerated.

Lucky boy I totally agree with you. I am just stunned hearing that another idiot did the very same thing again and he had more than the kid before him>>> Wow!!!!!!!!

Of all things getting caught just because of no T-shirt and was at some park. Wow. Talk of the luck of the police officer.

I just have a question to all of you >>>>>> Is it really illegal to be in a park without a T-Shirt??????? First time I heard of this concerning men. I know a woman has to obviously, but on men????????

I'm not suprised that he got asked to cover up! He looks like a lager, Tatoo beer monster. Even back in England I would expect him to show some respect and cover up.

He seems and sounds by the news report as the type who couldn't give a monkeys about anything in life and would be happy to get the death penality.

Never mind. Write then board....Whats the odds on another briton being arrested next week ? :o I'm open to all bets lol :D

what a clown. he'll be the most popular bloke in prison for a while. now i have to see if any of the thai dailies try to quote him as well - "kee kert kheun dai"... or what? and it'll be interesting to see the thai public's reaction to his comments.

could never stand people with that strange urge to bare their chest at every opportunity, unless they are of the opposite sex, that is.

Hmmm. The Nation reports of 20,000 tablets, "Kiernan was carrying a total of over 20,000 tablets, about half of which were damaged in the course of his arrest".

Todays question: Where are the misssing tablets?

Briton detained for carrying ecstasy

A British man was arrested with "ecstasy" pills worth Bt10 million on his person, police said yesterday.

Alan John Kiernan, 34, was found drunk and boisterous in Soi Maw Leng, Makkasan, Ratchathewee.

Police said they had been suspicious of Kiernan because he was wearing a blue-collared T-shirt and fancy black jeans.

When police searched Kiernan, they found one plastic cylinder containing 560 ecstasy tablets in the left pocket of his shorts and a total of 17 packages, each containing 560 ecstasy tablets, concealed around his waist, said duty officer Captain Panlop Samransom of Din Daen police station.

Kiernan was carrying a total of over 20,000 tablets, about half of which were damaged in the course of his arrest, Superintendent Colonel Thaksin Puangngoen said later.

Questioned at the police station, Kiernan said he had been acting as courier for a man called Mark, who had handed him the pills in Amsterdam.

Kiernan had then flown via Belgium and Switzerland and entered Thailand on Thursday. He was paid ?5,000 (Bt355,000) for carrying the drugs.

He said he had not been able to contact the person Mark had told him to phone and so had gone for a drink.

He was charged with possession of narcotics under schedule 1 of the narcotics law with intent to sell. The ecstasy had a street value of Bt10 million, police said, as it sells for Bt500 a tablet.

Police said they doubted the existence of Mark or the alleged contacts in Thailand.

Kiernan, who was not known to anti-narcotics authorities, may be a tourist and a newcomer to the drug trade, the superintendent added.

No, George, the question I want the answer to is HOW he was wearing his T-shirt if he was barechested. Also, the park seems to have turned into a soi.

And, also, is there something particularly suspicious in the minds of local officers about blue collars and black jeans???

Now suddenly, [taeng tua suphab] = dressing tidily and politely, means no T-shirts with blue collars. Or is it "polite", but still evokes the Eye of the Law? Intriguing. The saga continues.

Why don't you start your own thread written entirely in transliterated Thai?

and then bragging about getting through customs, that X must have been powerful.

probably tryed to kiss the man in brown when he approached him...TIT....

Ok, lets get the facts straight here George from the posted news you have put in here. There are things here not making any sense coming from your sources of what they are saying. The stories keep changing all the time for some reason and some of it remains the same.

Now here is the first post that was given>>>>>>>>>

He said he had not been able to contact the person Mark had told him to phone and so had gone for a drink.

Ok, does anyone notice anything here??????????

First two posts indicate he had 9,000 pills in possession. On the first post it said he wanted to sell to foreigners in Bangkok.

On the second one it says he got arrested for not wearing a T-Shirt, and was found walking around in the park trying to phone his local contact. Now the story goes on to say he was trying to sell to foreigners in Bangkok, and had admitted taking some himself.

On the third post it says he was arrested for being drunk and boisterous and the police were suspicious because he was wearing a blue collared T-shirt with fancy black pants. It goes on to say they now find 20,000 pills which the police say half was damaged. Then it goes on to say he was acting as courier for a person named Mark and was trying to make contact to someone in Bangkok, and had gone for a drink.

Something is dead wrong here folks. This story keeps changing like the wind as the news comes in.

So here is the question. Is it 9,000 pills or 20,000 pills? Was he wearing a T-shirt or not wearing a T-shirt?????????? Was he a bit high or drunk??????? Was he walking in the park or having a drink???????? Was he trying to sell or was he looking for his contact????????

So many questions here as I am pointing out George. So what is the real McCoy deal here!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The only thing that seems to be the same is about the special pants that were made.

black jeans in the thai heat? um

the different stories are rather strange..

how can you damage e tablets apart from throwing them in water!

well that must be the answer. he was over heating from the mixture of taking e, the thai sun and black jeans.. and the police had to hose him down before the arrest and the tablets disolved into his jeans?

fatty (hung over)
