  1. I've never won anything in a lottery. Maybe it is because I never enter them.
  2. 5% over each of the best 4 years....pie in the sky. 600 baht minimum wage by 2027? all foreign direct investment will evaporate and make growth even harder to achieve. Don't bet your house on the achievement of these goals
  3. I'm not sure the Thai negotiators know this but generally free trade agreements are free trade both ways, meaning that Thailand would have to drop its major source of revenue after VAT ie import duties. On the upside prices, of luxury cars like Mercs, BMW, Fiat (just joking), Porsche Ferrari etc will plummet causing waling and gnashing of teeth from thsioe pointers who have just bought one. The other thing is that whilst a free trade deal with UAE and Sri Lanka can be closed pretty quickly, the EU have never made an agreement that hasn't lasted a decade or more. I have just re-read the headline that is misleading mentioning the EU, when in fact it has nothing to do with the EU at all. They are talking about the old, and I thought extinct, EFTA (European Free Trade Association). I wonder if nation of consequence is in it.
  4. I was reading to day that in the UK where they have had a major upsurge of 270,000 EV sales this year, owners are now running into major insurance issues as many major companies (like John Lewis and Aviva) have stopped offering EV renewal insurance, and the companies offering insurance are doing so at extortionate rates. Apparently there is a lack of trained mechanics who can fix EVs when the battery is damaged, and it apparently takes 40% longer to do a repair to an EV (no reason given, apart from the battery issue).
  5. Bad news, there's no more money left and out credit is bad. Better bring Prayut back to take over.
  6. I'd prefer to work from home, draw a huge salary and not do anything all day.
  7. Is the Yom one of the rivers that feeds the Chao Praya?
  8. And he's not butt ugly either. I bet he could have pulled a girl on Sci 6 in Pattaya with no trouble at all.
  9. There are a lot of apparent paradoxes caused by language. Humans have a need to say 'now' sometimes and that is the word we use, or the 'present'. The concept isn't difficult to grasp as even babies can use the terms correctly. The fact that you can't think of a definition that satisfies you is neither here not there. Present is the momentary intersection between past and future. There I just made one up. If you really are truly puzzled and want to know exactly about time and language read Wittgenstein. or if you are simply interested in concepts you can read Proust for a literary understanding or Stephen Hawkins' Brief History of Time for a concise, elegant and easy to understand book.
  10. 8 million views of an Audi A4. I expect it might be expensive in Thailand because of the import taxes, but in the states it is the cheapest Audi you can buy. And I wouldn't think it was so marvellous 8 million people would want to view it.
  11. Chomper I have seen your posts with shock over the past few months and you ignorance and arrogance are staggering. I get my news from a variety of sources and nations, including the UK, US, Japan, Thailand, Germany and other European sites, Russia, Ukraine, Singapore and China, and also from Al Jazeera and Cradle for the Middle East news. I also read specialised magazines and commentary which have supposed expert opinion, most of which is naive and not expert at all. Having a wide variety of sources on similar events helps eliminate biases and blatant propaganda. For example, it is almost impossible to get an idea of how the Ukraine war is progressing from western only sources. It is impossible to get an idea of Ukrainian casualty figure from Ukraine news sources, or Russian casualty figures from Russian sources. Everything you see on the TV or news media is selling you ideas to gain pour support for what the politicians want to do. When you understand that that and internalise it, you will find the world much easier to interpret. I say the US is the world's biggest warmonger. You say it's not because your news sources e tis CNBN or BBC. But I say, count up the numbers of war the US have started (all in the best of good faith, naturally) and the number of wars other nations have started. The US have started more wars that the rest of the world since 1945.
  12. Not wanting to be rude, but couldn't she get a retirement visa as well (if she's over 50), they're not only for men you know.....at least I think not.
  13. Unfortunately I made a mistake about 20 years ago and bought everything Apple, and for all the family, computers, laptops, a speaker (which is still fantastic), etc etc. I wanted connectivity. Now the problem is that all the stuff breaks down at different times and I'm loathe to throw out stuff that works. Problem also is that I am getting old, and while I used Android and Windows at work 15 years ago, I no longer have the confidence to buy one and learn all over again. I feel stuck with Apple while hating them.
  14. Ahhh those are the beastly modern variety, no fun at all. You tore off the top layer and left a layer of paper underneath that you could paper over again and again. No the real wall paper was stuff that you sized the walls, then applied the wallpaper which grabbed like an electromagnet. You then had to scrape it off the whole house with a scraper about 2 inches wide.
  15. It's to protect the hotel in case their fire alarms, sprinklers etc were not up to snuff. They can hide behind a wall of defamation even if allegations of criminal behaviour or neglect are true.
  16. Wallpaper.....now I remember that stuff you stuck on the walls and scraped off every other years when you got bored with the pattern. I thought wallpaper had gone the way of dodos, you know extinct?
  17. Well at least the weeds are growing uncontrollably so they must be enjoying the weather.
  18. With real airlines most of the profit comes from expensive business and first class trips across the Pacific and Atlantic, not from tourists who barely pay for the fuel.
  19. So an hour of child care is 320 pounds (8000/25)? Seems a bit high to me. My granddaughters care was only 60 pounds and hour.
  20. Hasn't even got a screen, how can it receive TV?
  21. Good luck. I tried to cancel a free subscription to Apple TV. I stopped the payment and wrote to them telling them I would sue them if they didn't cancel the subscription. Note AMEX were very helpful as I had the subscription on AMEX. They cancelled my old card and gave me a new one. If there is one company I would love to see go bankrupt it is Apple. Good luck.
  22. I don't. I'd like them to sort Thais problems out first and foremost, especially poor Thais before tackling such terribly important issues like 90 day reporting. And if you were in the UK or US I'm damned sure you would be demand that the government did something for the British or the Americans before tackling immigrants or ex-pats problems. You are suffering from colonial syndrome where you expect everyone around the world to bend over backwards for you. The world has moved on my friend.
  23. It says the driver was worried about his shock absorbers in the article.
  24. One problem I foresee is timing. I pay US taxes and instead of April 15th each year we get until October 15th to file them. So later this month, I will file taxes in the US for 2022. This may be OK if Thailand will wait until 2005 to collect 2003 taxes. Somehow, I think they'll want you to pay and then file it back. I'm sure this would be a paperwork nightmare. Thai taxes are a good deal lower than the 36% (+10%) marginal rate that I pay in the US. The US allows my to write off any Thai taxes paid, BUT only to the rate of tax that I would pay in the US. I suspect that I would not be liable for taxes in Thailand under the current treaty assuming my income/deductions don't change much . For example if I paid 25% tax in Thailand but my tax rate in the US was only 20% then I would only be able to write off the Thai tax paid and would owe 5% US tax. All sounds good from this perspective, unless I have to shell out presumptive taxes here on 3 to 4 million baht, and then claim it back sometime later when I have filed my US taxes. I cannot remember whether the US issues receipts for taxes paid. I think not, but I usually get a small refund. I wonder how to go about claiming taxes paid here (because of timing issues) without a receipt. I am fortunate to have other residences in other tax jurisdictions and have decided to ensure I am not resident for taxes here in Thailand. I understand the time allowed in Thailand is 180 days so I must spend 185 days out of the country (maybe 187 depending on how they count the days). The other option is to move as I am sick of being a 'target' here, as a foreigner. .
  25. God, l the news is worse than in the Daily Mail, Britain's premier scandal sheet. Next up, Big Joke, relieving himself in the same town as a known gambling kingpin.
