Former Police Chief Arraigned Over Red Bull Heir's Case Mishandling
retarius replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
Why arraign these corrupt creeps now? I suppose they have just run down the clock on the murder charge. Just to note as well that most countries have no state of limitations on murder. Investigate them for unusual wealth as well. -
Thailand’s Casino Complex: 90% of Patrons Expected to be Locals

I guess we'll see millions more driven into the hands of the loan sharks. I bet the loan sharks are peeing themselves at the prospect of loaning money for idiots to gamble with. -
Star alliance frequent flyer miles . A swindle ?
retarius replied to surreybloke's topic in Thailand Travel Forum
Air miles programs generally stink. I don't use them any more. I spend a little extra and fly everywhere business class. Plenty of luggage allowance, they give you the money back ion you don't take the flight and you can change dates with minimal or no charge. I use two airlines only, ANA and Emirates. -
How stupidity is an existential threat to America
retarius replied to simple1's topic in Political Soapbox
If America presumes to lead the world....it doesn't but it pretends to and aims to....then citizens from all vassal countries should be able to vote for federal level congressmen, senators and presidents. Perhaps we could vote only for people who abhor war. -

Tin sheds on pickup trucks - legal or not?

I loathe these things with a passion. You cannot see around them on the highway when they are flying low. -
I spend almost no money shopping on the internet....and probably zero this year. When I came here I flirted with Lazada, but I was unhappy with the service. What I do spend money on is e-books for my kindle, nothing else and occasionally buy gift cards for my granddaughter. Having said that, being in my 70s, there is really nothing at all I want to buy, on Amazon or in stores. Consumerism has gone stale, the promise and lure of purchases that have consistently failed to deliver the promises made in the ad, have led to me being an anti-consumer. My wife makes up for my lack of spending however....any old tat she sees advertised she wants to buy and as gullible as they come, especially for medical supplements that are supposed to revolutionise one's life, but never do. I eat the supplements of course, because I love her.

Are Democrats allowed in Texas?
-
I've been thinking about this and my time in the US. When you go out for drinks with workmates in the evening you seem not allowed to talk about politics, wars, religion. Among men the only permissible topics are sports (yawn) and office gossip. I did ask a guy once who (uncharacteristically) was saying how great the Iraq war was going. I asked him about the children dying over there and he shrugged and said "bad things happen sometimes." I asked him how he would feel if it was his twin daughters that got shot or maimed? He went ape<deleted>. Fortunately our colleagues calmed him down.

Funny, I've thought about this.....nothing, she doesn't annoy me at all but she does do some strange things. The annoying things are now in the past....we have our 20th anniversary next year.

Thai man accuses cop of assault after he honked truck horn - video
retarius replied to snoop1130's topic in Bangkok News
Funny I get irrationally angry when people honk at me. I don't arrest them though....that seems like an over-reaction. I just fume in silence. -
Thaksin-era furniture returns as Paetongtarn takes office
retarius replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
Saving money I guess by using old furniture. Is this a good sign of being careful with government money; or a bad sign indicating that Paetongtarn doesn't give a hoot about having foreign leaders or VIPs in her own government sit on shabby furniture? Askin' for a friend. -

Yemen's Weapon Trade on X: A Disturbing Digital Marketplace
retarius replied to Social Media's topic in World News
I've never been to Aden (or Yemen) but have heard it is desperately poor and has had an awful lot of bombs dropped on it by Saudi and the US. So, to my way of thinking, it's not desperately surprising that people turn to arms dealing or even drug dealing over the internet to make a few bob, especially when you have to buy expensive rockets to attack Red Sea shipping with. Sadly, the people most likely to prosper from this black market trade (are you allowed to say black market these days, if not I apologise for being an insensitive bigot?) tend to be ruthless, vicious types, and probably terrorists to boot. At the present time, my personal need for machine guns, rocket launchers and tanks is negligible ie zero, so I am not in the market for these wares. -
Thailand Unveils 77 Billion Baht Light Rail Plans for Four Cities
retarius replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
I worry a bit about Thailand's investment in rail. I live in the North East and am eagerly awaiting the Chinese Shinkansen which is supposed to speed us up to Korat or Nong Khae in a physics-defying 30 seconds flat. I have heard it is to be downgraded to 50 kph max, and note that the track is only for one train. One thing I have learned about trains (good and bad) in my 40 years of expat living is that rail systems need to be "joined up". Britain oddly, broke their joined up system into a thousand pieces when they privatised British Rail and ruined an averagely good train service. My observations of Thais is that they have many strengths but joining ups things is not really their forte. Personally I'd rip out all existing track and scrap the trains and then hire a Chinese or Japanese guy to re-design the system from top to bottom. -
Thai Airlines Gear Up for Major Fleet Expansion Post-Covid Recovery
retarius replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
Doesn't Thai need to get its customer service in order before spending money on more places? To be fair I haven't flown them for a decade or more....having gotten sick of the pitiful service (business) and the corruption that the top were first class was inevitably crammed with directors and their families on shopping trips with 30 suitcases each. -
Heavy Rains Cause Landslides in Phuket, 1 Dead
retarius replied to Georgealbert's topic in Phuket News
I guess there is no answer to human greed is there? Anywhere with a nice view will have the trees chopped down and a house put up there (often illegally) causing landslides when the weather turns ugly. I never cared for Phuket and glad I don't live there. I went once and that was enough for me. -

Massive oil slick threatens Sattahip’s pristine shores
retarius replied to snoop1130's topic in Pattaya News
It certainly doesn't look 'massive'. It looks like a small oil spill that will disperse if you spray a bit of detergent on it. Better still find the culprit and the gang that are smuggling oil and make them pay for the clean up and spend a few years in the slammer. -
