  1. With traditional air con unit the compressor is turned either on or off which means it runs at full capacity when on. Inverter technology varies the speed of the compressor motor thus providing variable cooling capacity. To accomplish this they convert the AC voltage to DC and then modulate the DC with frequency that will then spin compressor motor at proper speed to provide desired cooling capacity. Remember once a room is cool it doesn't take full capacity of unit to keep it cool.

You can compare the process to the accelerator on your car, it gently increases or decreases power.

    Very good explanation !!

I have an inverter type LG and indeed much lower cost than my previous one.

I also insulated the ceiling by putting rockwool on top, makes it even more economical to run.

  2. Jeez, I thought by your pic you weren't older than 25! ;)

You had a great time to visit Thailand. Most places are over developed and over run with tourists. I've only been traveling here for 10 years, but even in that time frame, I've see big changes all over the country.

Wifey and I were in Panama 3 years ago. During our transit of the canal, we met with a group of 25 travelers who were also on our boat. None were younger than 65 and several were in their 80's. All were doing a 2 week tour of Panama. Great stuff!!!!!

Yes indeed, age does not restrict from traveling, physical condition however does, and my wilder years have caught-up with me, so I'm now catching myself looking for places where good medical care is in the vicinity. so Angkor Wat doesn't fit the bill, thank god I went there years ago. One of the highlights of my life !!!

But back on topic, Thailand still is a wonderful place to travel around in, but the biggest attraction for me is the people, they haven't changed much.

  3. Not every where, same as I have not traveled the whole of my home country, but most of the places that interest me.

Problem is that I started about 25 years ago, when Koh PhiPhi was still a natural park with a couple of bungalows and 1 (one) restaurant, Ao Nang in Krabi had 3 hotels and a couple of restaurants, etc. etc.

Agree about the Khmer temples in south Isaan except Pimai (too commercialized) and indeed the friendly locals.

Have however come to the age where comfort standards are more important than the scenery so now restrict myself to higher end hotels, and these are usually found in the tourist areas.

Shame really, but at 75 my adventure days are long gone.

  4. One can hope that the influx of russians, and the brits leaving in droves, the Songkran situation in Pattaya might actually improve :whistling:

    Yermanee

That's an interesting point. It's not clear to me how most Russians will embrace the strange Songkran spirit in Pattaya.

I think we might witness a couple of very angry russians.:lol::lol:

Maybe people will get the message not to mess with the Russkies? So that begs the question, how to pass as Russian for Songkran?

Walk around with a blond stunner hanging on your arm :o:jap::jap::o

  6. On the flip side, coming back in on Thursday night there was NO ONE even manning the Thai passport control.

fits with my theory of why there are not enough qualified Thais to man the immigration kiosks:

    >>>>> few Thais can speak and understand English fluently

    >>>>> few Thais want to interact all their working hours with farang. Plus, many of the farang, on arrival, are tired and possibly irritable. Plus farang don't adhere to the Thai tradition of always bowing to authority. If a farang notices something that's out of line, he/she might mention it. A Thai wouldn't.

Not to mention that as far as Thais are concerned, many farangs stink !!!

  7. It's not a question of whether or not Agoda include breakfast in the price, it's whether or not the HOTEL include breakfast in the price.

Agoda don't provide the breakfasts, the hotel do.

A valid point ... but the point I was making was that asiarooms.com and many other website hotel businesses can offer breakfast as approved by the hotel in question still at prices cheaper than Agoda. My problem with Agoda is their attitude of matching other website prices if they are higher. If they did their research they would realise that in the majority of cases their prices are higher but want to take advantage of a tourists naivety.

They do their research but as you said Agoda is all about luring naive customers.

  8. Some very interesting reactions to this poll.

I belong to a linguistic minority (at least here in Thailand) and having had to endure the Anglification of Pattaya for many a year, I see no harm in the Russification that is happening right now. What amazes me however is the fact that so many native English speakers are still in the " Rule Brittania " mindset, and find it a god given right that the whole world should speak English.

Languages divide peoples into groups and within these groups it is perfectly normal that one prefers his/her language.

    End of rant

  9. In my experience the best booking site for europe is booking.com.

You can also use their information re hotels (with reviews) to choose you're desired hotel and book with the hotel directly.

In France I would prefer an Accor hotel just because then you know that you get a standardized comfort level.

    Hope to have helped

  10. Having been living hear and happy as hell, I am surprised why some people are complaining that Thailand sucks and want to go back to their Western homelands. Thailand has many advantages which overweigh the bad and I have no intentions of going back to Germany. But I would like to know why some people are unhappy here and want to go back.

I think that is the answer to your question? :whistling:

Can you elaborate why Germany would be the defining factor ?

    Just curious.

What about asking at the office where one has to pass exam for a drivers license?

If I remember correctly time before last I was given a booklet in English to study before going in to take the test.

p.s. or maybe a driving school which caters to farangs ?

  12. Agree that Qatar is the best

They are good for baggage allowances. Everything else seemed pretty average to me.

I found price/quality to be the best deal compared to Emirates, Etihad, Oman Air, Gulf, China Airlines and Eva.

These are the only airlines that I have used in the last 10 years, so don't know about others.

But as always opinions are purely personal as each persons expectations are different.

    Regards
