  1. If the condo regulations say no pets, and the regulations are properly registered with the land office, then that is law and can be enforced on owners.

If you break the regulations the management can stop you using the common area, ie you can not get into or out of your room.

  2. Thanks for the comments,

WhatIsMyIP gives me the 1.10.216.55 - not the 100.66.218.202 in my router.

I've look further into Carrier Grade NAT and this seems to be exactly what TOT is doing - and it is causing the problems that have been mentioned on other website.

    1. VPN is no longer working at all for any VPN site I try.
    2. Skype is having problems, connection often do not make when answering a call and I am finding any call from my computer does not connect even though I get the 'ringing' tone. And the quality is much worse than previously.
    3. 'Ping' times have increased, the problem appears to be in the TOT network just before it steps out into the outside world - I'm getting 600+ most of the time. (I'm not a gamer so not too worried about that.)

My question now becomes, can I do anything about it or do I have to wait for TOT to adopt IPv6?

Randomsand suggested a new router - but why would that make a difference if TOT does not support IPv6?

  3. Thanks Chicog -

    Tried tracert:

to 100.66.218.202, what my router reports as my IP, one hop in <1ms

to 1.10.216.55, what everyone reports my IP address to be, it gets 2 hops, first to the modem (on 192.168.1.252) then to 172.17.21.154 and times out. This last IP address should be part of a private network.

I checked, tracert works to the likes of the BBC all OK, but ping does not work to any site, always times out even when I increase the wait time.

Forgot, the document is far to far over my head to understand!

I'm using 192.168.1.xxx for internal IP addresses

  4. I'm confused.

According to my router my IP address is 100.66.218.202 - which doesn't show up as belonging to anyone on an IP check

According to a number of sites my IP address is 1.10.216.55 - correctly putting me with TOT in CNX

Is my router (a Thomson TG585 v7) telling me lies - it never used to - or is something more sinister afoot?

And is any of this linked to my inability to log onto my VPN service?

  5. Now is a bad time to get a booking.

100 days ahead is mid May and the first 2 weeks of May has 3 or 4 holidays so there is a lot of pressure on the system. Normally I find all the slots are taken within a few hours of the day starting.

So try at midnight to see if any spaces come up.

PS One of the things that irritates is that I have to make two bookings, one for me and one for my wife. This must waste a lot of booking spaces especially as we are dealt with together and probably take not much longer than a single person.

  6. If the shop or wherever does the currency exchange you get a much poorer exchange rate than letting visa or mastercard do the exchange.

    2-3% worse.

Always pay in local currency for the best rates.

But if you forget or the shop fails to ask you can often get it corrected by your card holder if you complain quickly.

  7. I would assume that if you wait until you do an actual extension of stay then that is put in your new passport and there is nothing to transfer from the old passport to the new - or am I missing something?

There is another thread http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/700958-new-uk-passport-immigration-require-letter/ referring to not making the transfer - post number 16.

Do immigration charge for transferring whatever it is they transfer?

  8. For those going to the UK both carphone warehouse and fone4you (or something like that) will sell you a PAYG phone that is highly subsidised by one of the mobile operators, up to 75% of the price. In exchange you have to buy some airtime, maybe £10 worth. This still gives you a phone at a fraction of the Thai price - my last one cost me £10 or around 2,000 Baht in Tesco Lotus.

The interesting point is both these companies generally refuse to sell locked phones as they would then have to carry 5 times the stock levels. So ask in their shop and you will be clearly told if the phone is locked or not. And slip in the GiffGaff SIM for their great service.

  9. Chiang Mai immigration informed us that working as the JP was generally regarded as a paid job and required a work permit but immigration did not consider being on the committee to be work.

Different immigration offices might have different opinions.

I also believe that if complaints are made to them about a foreigner they will investigate, but from my experience they are very fair.

  10. Misty, but not bad. No cloud. No problems weatherwise. Can't see any buffalo and some planes come straight in or out

I can see the runway from my room to the north of the airport, but also use www.flightradar24.com which gives live movement of the planes.

Air Asia from KL has now landed.

Air Asia FD3437 is about to land back in Bangkok.

  11. What is happening at the airport?

So far at least 4 flights have aborted landings this morning since 7.50am.

The first flight, Air Asia from BKK FD3437 seems to be heading back to Bangkok.

The air asia flight from KL has justs aborted for the second time - tried from the south and just tried from the north.

Couple of flights have come and gone, eg TG2100 landed but from the north not from the south.

    Any ideas?

    • I've down load and installed Mapfactor Navigator. I assume now I have to buy their map for South East Asia, right?

Don't buy, just download the free map of Thailand - and any other countries areas you want.

Tap 'map manager' and tap the left hand side 'download maps'. These are the free OSM maps.

  12. If using an Android tablet Navigator (by Mapfactor) or Route 66 can be downloaded from the Google play store (you will find it on the tablet). You can then download maps of Thailand. Both show all the roads and lanes in Chiang Mai and will either 'follow' you or you can get them to direct you to where you want to go.

Must use WiFi to download the apps and maps, the files are big. Both then work fine offline using the GPS in the tablet. If you don't have your own WiFi call in for a coffee somewhere and download the files there.

Neither are brilliant for walking, they will show where you are (even if off the road) but neither have footpaths etc.

    Personally prefer Navigator.

  13. Don't worry about the condo act - that is mainly about how to run a condo.

1 - check the condo building allows you to buy - foreigners can only own up to 49% of the building. The office can tell you this. You seem to be buying a Thai owned unit.

2 - get money, it must be brought into the country and you must have the correct form from the bank.

3 - you need your passport.

Then you and the owner or someone able to act for them go to the land office for the transfer, takes a couple of hours. You MUST take someone you trust who is fluent in Thai, both written and spoken, to read everything to make sure you are buying the correct thing. Everything is done in Thai.

You then get a lovely big document with your name as owner at the end, all again in Thai. Photocopy it at the land office as they have the best photocopier for this size document.

It is actually very easy, almost too easy. The difficult part is selling a condo .................................

  14. I've used apple macs, I prefer a computer and operating system that I own and can do what I want with rather than one that I have to pay over the odds for and then have to ask permission to do anything apart from read e-mails.

It was the power lead that was not making a good connection on my drive.

  15. Not sure you can make a SATA drive a slave?

But I seem to have found the problem, the data cable is not always making a connection properly. Not sure I think much of these new SATA conectors, it is not the first time I have had such a problem.

    Thanks for the comments

  16. Thanks, I have two partitions, 2gb abd 1 gb and the drive worked fine in another XP machine. I just want to put it into this machine now.

The problem is windows will not start if diskwizard from seagate is installed.

I have an older motherboard with 2013 dated BIOS - but no UEFI.

I did wonder if the 3TB drive ever shows up in the BIOS as more than 800 GB in a legacy BIOS?

Of course there is the option to switch to windows 7 - do I still need DiskWizard with Win 7 and an older BIOS?

  17. Trying to install a 3TB hard drive on an XP machine for Data only (not bootable). I've done this before using Seagate disk wizard with few problems, but this one beats me.

But I forget, should the drive show up in the BIOS as more than 800 GB after installing????

What is happening, everytime I install the drive and run diskwizard I can see the disk and files, but on re-boot the BIOS still show only 800gb drive and the computer hangs on the windows startup screen. Remove the 3TB drive and it starts fine.

    Any help welcome.

  18. Firstly, I had problems when thinking about applying for a retirement visa in the UK - the police could not provide the information required.

Secondly it is much easier to get a non-immigrant O visa, gives you 60 days extendable by 30 days stay in Thailand. Then in Thailand get your retirement visa. No police check then needed.

Get the non-immigrant O from a consulate, (Hull), you'll probably have to show 800,000 Baht equivalent in a UK bank account but someone else will come along and confirm that.
