I have to wonder about your conclusions. There are a fair number of tourists, but not a lot of the kind that spend much money. In general, from what I have observed, the Chinese are very frugal. Of course, some businesses are still doing well, but over all, I would say not anything like a few years ago when more free spending Westerners were flocking here.

Maybe they are just not buying books my mate owns a guesthouse 18 rooms and he is chock full and has been for the last quarter and future bookings looking very strong not only that but they seem to be spending plenty on tours etc from his tour desk and yes Chinese are a big part of his custom

I'm not criticizing the guys at all. If they are happy, good for them. I've just not known anyone personally who would do such a thing. I would think one would have to have rather low self-esteem to do it.

I wonder if they rent it or own it? The main place across I believe they own.

No, everything is now in the newer/bigger place at the same location. The newest location is in Pa Daed, South of Aom Muang road. Those are the two locations. (Number 1 Bar/Bistro in Loy Kroh Soi 1, and Number 1 Beer Garden on the Pa Daed road.)

I wouldn't read too much into using the shack on one side for storage; the main place is already one of the biggest bars in the area.

There is a place called Chiang Mai fishing park that has three differant ponds, Thay have swai, tilapia, Pacu and alligator garr to name a few. The wife (she likes fishing more than me, if you can believe it) and I go there at least once a week. Very relaxing and they sell drinks, food, bait and tackle right there so it's a one stop shop. It's vey shady there also I might add. I know of about 10 spots around Chiang Mai to go fishing and we like this place the best.
