Yes, something about 4 inch... However, bamboo is bigger, at least compared to bamboo in my home-country...???? A Thai bamboo craftsman once asked me about the size of bamboo in my country, which I told him, and draw the size. He was thinking for a while, then he concluded: Thailand small girls, big bamboo - farangs, big girls, small bamboo...???????? And by the way, railway gauge is also smaller, only one meter...????

Long term rental on Samui - 2 questions
khunPer replied to ding's topic in Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Koh Tao
Sea view pool villas, and especially beach front, are of high demand; and private beachfront villas are little rare and often also little expensive, if they are not too old. I live beachfront, and there are rental villas close to me, but at the moment they seems booked on long term. However, there are tons of sea view villas all over Samui, many of them - if not most - are for rent. -
Long term rental on Samui - 2 questions
khunPer replied to ding's topic in Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Koh Tao
It's depending of what you are looking for, i.e. price, size and location. Many houses are available right now, but might be that you are looking for something else. Luxury easily get booked in advance and often through agents. AirBnb is also a place to search, many uses that, but photos and description can be slightly different from real life...???? -
Long term rental on Samui - 2 questions
khunPer replied to ding's topic in Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Koh Tao
Your best choice is to get to Samui with or without pre-booking for something on short term, and search locally, you might see a nice house with a sign outside "For Rent", something that is not available on the Internet or through an agent. There are plenty available bungalows and villas on long term, but it might be depending of what you are looking for; i.e. price, location and size. Some, if not many, villas comes with inventory, but you have numerous possibilities to buy your own; there are plenty of furniture shops with stuff available from cheap to relative high quality. I've been renting on Samui during 6 years - before I build my own house - and when I found something that I like and a kind landlord, I used to negotiate a one year prepaid agreement, and I could save quite a bit doing that. I never had any problems with my landlord and the rented property, but I checked both the villa and the neighborhood before I rented it...???? -
Are there any Grab cars running in Samui?
khunPer replied to edwardandtubs's topic in Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Koh Tao
I think that is a conclusion from the past, last time I bought a new car it was the official list price from the factory outlet on Samui, and a small discount plus free stuff could be negotiated. Second hand cars might however be cheaper on the mainland...???? -
Thai SS for household employees
khunPer replied to rchapstick's topic in Jobs, Economy, Banking, Business, Investments
No, you are thinking of the voluntary extension for health coverage, for example after active working life. The SS minimum is 500 baht, normally with half to be paid from the employer and the other half by the employed, i.e. 250 baht each. The rate varies year-by-year, but is normally 10 percent, however maximum 1,500 baht per month. At the moment the rates are educed due to Covid...???? -
It's all depending of what you expect to find in Bangkok and your budget - lots of excellent hotels for almost everything...????????

I also use the 800k deposit method, you will not need a 12-months bank statement when using that method, just 3 month plus a photo-copy of the bank book. I've used the 800k deposit method for almost 15 years and I've never been asked for 12-month statements, and it's not a requirement either. @gearbox, Bangkok Bank branches can only issue 6 month statements, as their computer system covers no data older than six month; the same time-frame you has access to in their online-banking. A 12-month statement need to be ordered from- and printed by the head office in Bangkok, it takes about a week and costs 200 baht...????

Thai children’s IQ levels on the rise, over 10% above 130
khunPer replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
From the article... ...while 10.4% of the students surveyed have an IQ above 130... [ ... ] Only roughly 2% the global population who have taken the test have IQ above 130, according to ourworldindata.org and test sites such as iqtestprep.com and 123.test.com. [ ... ] The minister also attributed 10.4% of the children having IQs above 130 to their families supporting their intellectual development and he urged agencies concerned to learn from these families regarding their intellectual development plans for Thai children. It will be interesting to see the number of Nobel Prize winners from Thailand in the future... To my modest knowledge, IQ test and calculations depends on "spread", if you use a spread on 15 - like Mensa, which is a society of people with above "high" intelligence, to be member your level shall be over 130 with spread 15 - you might have a lower intelligence- score than if the spread is higher like for example 24. Examples: If IQ=117 with spread 15; then IQ=118 with spread 16; and IQ=127 with spread 24. Some popular "for fun" IQ-tests might use a quite high spread, or I'm extremely intelligent with a score of 146.1 (5 years ago)...???????? - unfortunately the Mensa-test did not agree...???? 0.2% of the World's population is said to have an IQ over 140, it's mentioned to be people like Stephen Hawkins and Bill Gates. Albert Einstein is said to have had an IQ-level of 160. Less than 3% of the World's population have an IQ between 131 and 140. Mentioned as examples are Arnold Schwarzenegger and Nicole Kidman. About 6% have an IQ between 121 and 130, while around 12% have from 111 to 120. So above average intelligence, i.e. over 110, to extremely high IQ counts for 21%-22%, but amazing Thailand has over 10% of their school children above IQ 130 in Mensa level - wow...???? - well done...???? -
Banking / tax
khunPer replied to brianthainess's topic in Jobs, Economy, Banking, Business, Investments
What I'm saying was -and is that state pensions and other pension from UK will be taxed in UK - as there are "no relief", and therefore can be taxed on both states - but as "income tax" is covered by the DTA, the total tax will not be higher than the highest tax. I.e. if Britain has already withheld income tax and British income tax is higher that Thai income tax, and Thailand also tax that part of the income, which has been transferred into Thailand same year as earned, Thailand shall pay that tax back by using the "credit method". Thailand however has the option not to tax the money by using the "exemption method"...???? Source: "Introduction to DTA". -

Banking / tax
khunPer replied to brianthainess's topic in Jobs, Economy, Banking, Business, Investments
You need to check the Double Taxation Agreement (DTA) between Britain and Thailand if his pension might be taxed in both states, i.e. register for income tax in Thailand. Only one income tax will be paid, and that would be the highest, which probably is the British. Most pensioners don't need to register for income tax in Thailand, but the Thai "taxman" begins to check if tax has been paid in the country of origin of the pension...???? -

Samui 2022 - Whats happening !

Friday 6th and Saturday 7th May, Samui Bike Week. NB: The event this year event takes place by Global House - the new large building material mall - in Maenam. -
Last year I went four times to the revenue office to try to pay my land & house tax bill - actually, only land, as the house is a home with appreciated value under 10 million baht - but the bill was not ready, »please come back next month«. Unfortunately the last last "next month" just passed number one and the tax had already been calculated - I however never got a bill - and now I was late, and due to that I had to pay 10 percent penalty, but it was not my fault, the kind staff said, as I haven't got a bill, but the rules ware like that. This years I again went early - the revenue office had told me two years ago to come early to pay, in February - but they hadn't made the calculations yet, but they would send me a new letter with a bill in April and I shouldn't come back before - they are probably tired of the by now well known farang that insist to pay his land-tax - I however havn't yet got any new bill with tax-calculation. Perhaps I better visit the revenue office again and pay bill and fine, and fine for late payment...

Sounds about correct, I pay 4.54 baht per unit for 3-phase normal home rate, total 971 units last month.
