  1. Depending on which island you might choose to live on...
  2. So what do you suggest? "Travel insurance is a must and knowing the conditions is also a must."
  3. Very, very sad, but yet another story about fundraising and something is missing in the article about insurance and cover – or the insurance is missing. Travel insurance is a must and knowing the conditions is also a must.
  4. You need 800k baht in your bank account two month before your application, and three month after your extended stay is granted. Thereafter the account cannot go below 400k baht until two month before your next application for extended stay, by which time the bank account needs to be topped up to 800k baht again. I've been using the deposit method for extension of stay based on retirement since 2006. I also have Bangkok Bank, but in periods I used others for slightly higher interest, also SCB. My method and advice is to use a separate account for the extension-of-stay deposit, so it is easy and clear for the immigration officer to check the funds and balance. I also show my daily expenses account to where I move my retirement living expenses funds from abroad and withdraw money. If you can afford the keep 800k baht permanently in the bank – and thereby don't get nightmares about topping the funds up – then a 12-month fixed account gives the best interest. That's what I use and once a year I withdraw the interest, so there is always a clean 800k baht balance...
  5. Be present when exorcism was performed by a monk in a temple...
  6. Your school should be able to inform you about legality of work permit for home teaching, it's quite often done, also by foreign teachers. In principle all income is taxable and when looking at the income tax rate in percent in the lower figures it's between 5% and 10%, so not worth avoiding with risk of future problems (said by a person coming from a country where the lowest income tax rate from work is 46%...)...????
  7. No, but if you wish to extend next year you might not be able to do it, as your balance has gone under the 800k baht within the three month period. However, that might not be actual in your case when moving permanently.
  8. Have you read the article..? "According to the Thai news outlet Channel 3 Plus, authorities did not find evidence of marijuana use when drug-testing Antonio. When Antonio’s urine was purple, police brought him to a hospital for another examination, and found that there was a narcotic substance in his body. Police then handed Antonio to investigators on allegations of using a type 1 drug (ice)."
  9. Compared to the amount of people attending the Full Moon parties and young people dying from drugs elsewhere, this case is not special; however, very sad for the family.
  10. It's been in the news here on ASEAN NOW, so you can try to search it; I don't store links of everything I read, I still got a pretty fair memory installed...????
  11. Legally you are not married, but Thailand has begun to view unregistered marriage as what you call "Life partners". There has been a few cases mentioned in the media, where the couple has been viewed as married. In that case, everything that was not separate property before a marriage is viewed as common property – including whatever funds you have brought in from abroad, if you cannot prove they were legal savings before the village marriage – shall be divided with 50 percent to each part. However, inheritance received during a marriage is after Thai law separate property.
  12. To my knowledge: When you stay in the kingdom is based on another visa – LTR – and your extension of stay based on retirement with original entry on a non-OA visa has ceased, you don't need the former bank deposit of 800k baht anymore, but instead you of course need to fulfill the conditions for the new LTR visa...
  13. I could think of many better – and more fun – ways to invest my money in Thailand...
  14. Depending what your are looking for. Some times Shopee has better offers than Lazada, and some times the variety of products are larger in Lazada. Use both – like I do – and remember to check seller's ratings and eventual user comments and ratings below the product...
  15. You can find areas in Thailand with very little average air pollution, I'm as Okay here as I was in my home country...
  16. All that might be possible, when the population becomes the highest income taxed population in the World. That may make them end up with as little as now, and by then complaining about their need for higher income and more welfare, lower electricity bill and lower fuel costs, and lower costs of living. And don't forget that when minimum salary raise the prices for living expenses will go up – because everybody is paid a higher minimum salaray and other salaries also raise, bacause prices and inflation raise – and export falls, as the labour cost becomes too high, which often result in unemployment and more tax money needed for welfare. How I know? Well, I'm from the highest taxed country in the World, yes "Number One", it's named Denmark. The situation there is: An income tax between 38% and 53% plus an extra income tax of 8% on your work-income. i.e., your income tax from work can be between 46% and 61%; 25% v.a.t. on all goods and services; 25-150% tax on new cars – the more expensive car, the higher taxation – plus the annual tax depending on weight and fuel-type; an average unit price (kWh) for electricity equivalent to about 11 baht; diesel fuel around 65 baht per liter; and for the remaining subjects: "You name it, Denmark tax it"...
  17. From the article: "...her work permit did not allow her to form her own country..." It almost sounds like that if you apply for the right work permit, you can "form your own country"...
  18. In general, inheritance is handled by the court the country where the deceased had permanent residence or where mainly living. The lawyers that wrote the book "Thai Law for Foreigners" suggests to make two Last Will, one for possessions in Thailand following Thai inheritance law, and another for possessions in one's home country following that laws. Be aware that real estate might always be handled in the country where the it is and follows the local law. So if you live permanently in Thailand, it will always be a Thai court (lawyer) that handles the estate, no matter where in the World you die.
  19. Perhaps the climate table for Samui might have your interest, but always remember that weather and climate are two different things. Climate is a long term average, weather is right now and can in Southeast Asia be quite dependent of El Nino and La Nina. Samui has two seasons, summer and rain (monsoon). Furthermore Samui climate and weather is regulated by the north-east monsoon... Just a short distance away, on the opposite side of the Malacca Peninsula, is Phuket; but here it's the south-west monsoon, which results in a quite different climate... So the saying that "the weather is better on Samui" is correct... And if you compare with the Isaan Plateau in northern Thailand, the climate up there is also quite different due to the landscape and surrounding mountains. Furthermore there are three seasons; summer, rain and winter...???? So, the weather is an excellent excuse for selecting the party island...???? Samui as permanent residency for all year summer and barefoot Xmas...
  20. Thais are well known for living an easy comfortable life, especially the men that let the women work – so no wonder that Thai ladies are looking for a provider, so she can also have an easy comfortable life; her odds for finding that kind of provider is higher among foreigners...
