Electric Vehicles in Thailand
Bandersnatch replied to Bandersnatch's topic in Thailand Motor Discussion
I have 3 videos on my channel about how I am using my EV to provide backup power to my house. This is video 2 of 3 with links to the others in the description. -

The thing about solar in Thailand is that you get abundant power in the middle of the day. So if you installed a small solar system like 5kW, your house is probably only using about 1kW per hour but in the middle hours of the day you will be getting close to an 4 extra kW. My AWD performance EV (not the most efficient EV) can travel 7km/kWh (580km range from a 82.5kWh battery) You drove 50km/day last year so you need only 7kWh per day. So yes the power for your EV is free if you installed solar for your house -

You can use it like a regular charger or you can choose to use only the amount of power that would be have been exported. I considered it as I used to charge my car in the middle of the day and wake up after my nap to find that the it had clouded over and I had drained my house batteries into my car. Now I just wait until it gets dark (My inverters priority setting is Solar First, Then Utility, Then Battery) and power the house from the Seal for a few hours. -

I contacted myenergi in the UK about their zappi charger and they said they would ship it to Thailand for ฿40,000. It is a solar diverter like their Eddi hot water heater that monitors how much electricity you export back to the grid via ct clamps and sends the same amount of power into the car and if you have the eddi as well it will then heat the water up in your hot water tank. Being off-grid it was no use to me. -
Interesting that you separate EV and home charging, I would like to know more. I am following a company that is developing DC charging direct from solar much more efficient as you are not inverting from DC to AC then back into DC in the car. Yes I do love driving my EV: I love the instant torque I love the 0-100km/h in 3.8 seconds without spinning my wheels I love that it has perfect 50:50 weight distribution I love that it has an incredible low centre of gravity and goes round corners like it’s on rails I love the drag coefficient of just 0.219 Cd which is better than a Porsche Taycan I love the regenerative breaking and not having to use the brake pedal I love the adaptive suspension I love that the battery pack is a structural component, increasing torsional stiffness and so increasing handling limits I love the Torque vectoring which sends power to which wheel needs it most I love that it only has one gear I love that it has a very long wheel base I love that it so silent to drive for me and other road users I love that I am not poisoning the pedestrians and motorbike riders around me when I drive or sit at the traffic lights I love being able to switch on the aircon while I’m still in the restaurant

BYD Seal tips, tricks and help

The problems trying to repair damage on the plastic sections of the car: There is no clearcoat to protect the paint and that can be polished to hide scratches. There is no paint just a colored plastic wrap which leaves a big hole when it’s damaged The paint available online does not match the color on the car and is very thin and watery, making filling the hole difficult. The color wrap is very thin and is easily damaged by aggressive polishing. -
You don't say which honda so I checked for the brio which is the smallest and most efficient. The official figures are 46 mpg‑US; 55 mpg-imp. Quite a bit different to your claimed 70mpg https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honda_Brio I drive my EV on excess solar power after I have powered my house and charged my solar batteries. Driving my EV does not produce any tailpipe emissions and as it powered by solar no CO2. Definitely a win for the EV.

Paint - there are links to Lazada and Shopee further back in the discussion, but if anybody can't find them, I will dig them out tomorrow. I bought 2 versions. Big pot of good quality thick paint that didn't match the colour of the Seal - too cream Small pen good colour match but very thin and watery Colour match - big blob from big pot, small blobs from the pen Paint wait 24 hours and polish Before First run: I have to repeat a few times -

Again with no supporting citations. I have already explained lithium supply is currently matching demand if it wasn't prices would be going up not down. Don't forget competing Sodium-ion batteries, JAC and BYD are already using them. Don't get me started on how uneconomic H2 is. When I make power from my solar system to put in my electric car there is some small efficiency loss due to the inversion process, but over 90% of the energy ends up in my car. With the current best commercial electrolyzers, green hydrogen's efficiency is around 30%, which means 70% of the renewable energy put into producing green hydrogen is lost. Toyota keeps making promises about it's Mirai but you can't buy it here. Then where will you fill it up? Thailand has no public H2 filling stations. There are currently taking H2 station out in Europe nobody is adding new ones. -

"Because I also post information on some of the EV downsides, I am an infidel to EV worshippers" Post what you want but back it up with references from reputable sources - nobody is interest in your uninformed opinions without citations. "Spout some numbers of your own to disprove my claim only 20% ( at best ) of ICE's can be replaced by EV's, with current lithium reserves being mined." The numbers you spouted are without any references and so are worthless. Before the EV boom there was very little demand for Lithium outside being a mood stabilizer - have you tried it? EV demand ramped, prices for lithium rose, more supplies came online, the prices stabilized. "Please don't go with extracting lithium from seawater, that is thermodynamic bullsh!t. We would have done it decades ago with gold if it was technically/economically feasible." "technology that uses solar energy to extract lithium from seawater won first prize at a Princeton innovation showcase. The system has demonstrated an improvement of more than ten times the standard rate of extraction from brine" https://environmenthalfcentury.princeton.edu/research/2023/new-lithium-extraction-technology-wins-first-prize-innovation-forum So who do we trust not to be a bullsh!ter Princeton University or @Lacessit How about something from Yale? https://e360.yale.edu/features/as-water-scarcity-increases-desalination-plants-are-on-the-rise The output from desalination plants is concentrated brine with a far higher percentage of Lithium than normal seawater. I could go on. -

I bought my wife a Suzuki Swift to learn to drive in, (her choice not mine) it was a god awful car, very rough ride and every bump went straight through you. After a year she had passed her test and we tried to get shot of the swift. We had paid ฿550,000 for the car new and after six months of trying to sell it we finally accepted ฿320,000. So don't tell me EVs make bad investments and ICE cars are great. -

I own 2 EVs and have driven tens of thousands of miles in EVs and never experienced anything but a predictable drop in range. I have the range display as "Dynamic" so it reacts in real time to your driving style. -

@Lacessit Why is it that in an argument about EVs between an EV driver and a Fossil Driver, the Fossil Driver's arguments always fall flat and he attempts to pass off opinions as fact and finally resorts to bad taste humor? The EV driver having lived with both types of vehicle knows the real strengths and weaknesses of both. The Fossil Driver on the other hand is 50% ignorant -

Fossil thinking. Do you know exactly how much fuel is in your vehicle right now? Of course you don’t, but I do. Do you have an app on your phone to check? Of course you don’t, but I do. You only know how much fuel you have when you actually start it up and get a slap from your wife when she sees it’s empty - again! “I told you to fill it up and that I had an appointment this morning. Now we are going to be late” You are probably thinking that you might be able to fill up on the way home, but that’s what you thought yesterday and you forgot - again. Now who’s going to have range anxiety on a local trip! I always leave the house with 600km of range. I put it on charge when I get back home and get a notification on my watch when it’s done. -
Tesla started selling in Thailand in December 2022 (not counting grey imports from Hong Kong) In the chart posted by Pib above there are Tesla sales in all months of 2023, but at low level compared to Australia where they were sold quite a bit cheaper. Tesla dropped prices in all markets several times in 2023 but only reduced prices in Thailand in October 2023 after the launch of the BYD Seal here which attracted 1,000 orders in the first hour after launch.
