  1. My bet is that CNN will provide the questions in advance to Team Biden on the sly, and either not provide them to Trump, or provide false questions. If, as some have reported, there will be on-the-spot fact checks, I'd bet that the fact checks will be slanted as well. If this was meant to be fair, CNN could host the debate and allow someone else to formulate and safeguard the questions. Fox, maybe. Not that any of that will save Biden, who's probably going to be replaced at the DNC convention. On a wingnut conspiracy note, Google "Biden clone Mission Impossible mask". Lots of folks don't think it'll even be Biden at the debate.
  2. Dudley Do-Right and Sweet Polly Purebred Nell Fenwick. (Oops, almost conflated my Saturday cartoons)
  3. Gotta admit, I've never invited a stranger back to my room. But if I did, I'd spring for a 2nd room, just based on some dates I've had where I'd pay cash money to get away from her. That goes up exponentially if it's a tag team thing like the OP story. Add in sleeping and the possibility that I'd be drugged and/or robbed, popping for a 2nd room with none of my valuables, that I could escape just seems like the prudent thing to do.
  4. Seriously? You'd travel halfway around the world with less than $3,000 USD in cash? Especially as a tourist. What happens if comms are down (for a myriad of reasons), or if your 2FA phone gets lost or stolen or damaged? Or your wallet gets filched on the MRT with all your credit and debit cards in it? It'll take days to clear up that mess and that can get mighty hungry, even if you've paid hotels in advance. With my banks back home, even longer if it happens on a Friday because they won't be open until Monday, even the phone number on the cards. I generally keep $4,900 USD separate from my wallet, because $5K is the non-report limit for some of the countries I visit. Sometimes, I'll go for years between dipping into it. But when I needed it, I needed it. Usually because the bank "detected unusual card use" and 2FA didn't go through, for SIM issues.
  5. Gosh. And here I thought it was a public forum, and this thread is about quality escapes from Boeing. With dutch rolls being such a rare occurrence in commercial aircraft, and virtually never causing damage, what do you figure are the odds that this may turn out to be another quality escape on the Max line? I guess we'll know more in 30 days or so... “Having a Dutch roll event is unusual,” John Cox, an instructor at the University of Southern California and CEO of the consulting firm Safety Operating Systems, told The Washington Post. “Having one that caused damage is unheard of,” he said. https://www.westernjournal.com/faa-investigating-boeing-737-suffers-dangerous-dutch-roll-incident-midair/ CBS News Aviation Safety analyst Robert Sumwalt told CBS News senior transportation and national correspondent Kris Van Cleave via email that, "Any uncommanded flight control movement is potentially significant. The fact that this resulted in significant damage makes this sort of a big deal." https://www.cbsnews.com/news/southwest-airlines-dutch-roll-boeing-737-max-phoenix-oakland-flight/ I'm also wondering why Southwest had an equipment damaging inflight event on May 25, but didn't report it to the NTSB until 2 weeks later? Seems like that's something they should have reported as soon as they saw the damage and took the airplane out of service.
  6. I'll post this link to a Southwest Airlines Boeing Max having a Dutch Roll "event" in flight that did some damage. It'll be interesting to see what caused it... https://www.usatoday.com/story/travel/airline-news/2024/06/14/southwest-airlines-dutch-roll-investigation/74098322007/
  7. So as a Biden supporter, would you care to comment on why Putin attacked under Obama's watch and under Biden's watch, but was strangely quiet during Trump's watch when he said (and I'm paraphrasing) FAFO? Could it be that those strongly worded responses from Obama and Biden were too predictable and too feeble?
  8. Gotta say, I love the concept for Thailand. When you call them "knockdowns", does that mean they can be knocked down and moved off your wife's land when the divorce comes through and she still owns the land (but the house on it can be in a foreigners name...)? Seems there should be a healthy market for a movable home, especially with the vagaries in Thai land laws that even catch Thai people out when they build a house on land that's set aside for agriculture. And not to be spiteful (much), but I love the idea of the ex coming home to an empty lot where she schemed that she'd move her side guy in and live happily ever after. I'd pay extra for the CCTV footage of the look on her face. (Not that I have a Thai wife, nor any prospects) Hope the discussion continues with more options and personal experiences... The examples posted so far look pretty good option. $<25K USD seems like a deal. Any idea what the all-in cost would be including slab, PEA, water, septic, delivery, labor, etc? (Leave out the land, which is way too variable) Edit: And one last question (for now). Is there a market or even any brokers who sell knockdowns to be moved? Seems like there would be some available from people whose needs changed and they want or need to sell.
  9. I especially like the stories about cannibalizing each other, torturing their prisoners and enslaving each other. All while taking land, game and water from each other and basically committing genocide as much as their technology allowed. https://www.science20.com/content/war_cannabalism_torture_native_americans_werent_the_nature_loving_doves_humanities_academics_claim So again I ask... Who gets the land back? The people we took it from, or the people they took it from? Or the people they tortured and murdered to steal it from? Edit: And I use the "we" loosely. My ancestors were scratching out a living on our turnip patches in Belarus (or Ukraine) while all that was going on. So I'm not feeling inclined to pay taxes into reparations for stuff we didn't do, done by people who have been dead over 100 years.
  10. I don't advocate swimming under a red flag, but I sure understand the temptation. Especially if I had flown thousands of miles from the tundra back home on my annual 2 week holiday, and the water looked calm (which is misleading under a rip current). That's why red flags are inadequate and there should be live human beings, warning people and explaining why that relatively calm looking water is hazardous. Seems like a reasonable cost of operating a world class tourist beach destination. We'll never see an autopsy, but it would also be interesting to know if the guy drowned, or if he vapor locked from a bad heart while exerting himself in the water. At that age, I suspect either scenario is about as likely.
  11. Like that's exclusive to rocket festivals. What do you propose, banning all gatherings where people may not get along with each other?
  12. Fueled by big balls and a lot of booze. Say what you want, it looks like a lot of fun and I'd hate to see it ruined for millions, like so many nanny state escapees posting here would have it. Spectators aren't compelled to show up, nor are they forced to stand so close. (Or forced to get so drunk, either).
  13. Nor the number of ambulance chasing tort attorneys.
  14. I'm not sure that collecting too many of these in your passport is a good idea. This one came from the BKK One Stop when I foolishly assumed that renewing my WP and extension also qualified as a 90 day report. It didn't. Oops. Of course, YMMV depending on your Immigration Office, and also depending on the IO who peruses your passport to decide your fate when it comes to your stay in Thailand.
  15. So, who are you going to give the reparations to? The Lakota, or the Apache who they took the land from from, or the Cheyenne who they took it from? And yes. That timeline is contrived. But the concept is accurate. Every acre was taken from someone else, who took it from someone else, who took it from someone else.
  16. Interesting that you'd choose a dissent opinion to support your claim. You may agree with her. Hell, I may agree with her (I don't). But the majority of the justices don't. If the 2nd Amendment was absolute, machine guns would be legal for everyone that can own any gun. But they're not. Because Congress made them illegal. Not the ATF or the DOJ. As I stated, I think bump stocks are stupid. But that's not for me, nor for unelected bureaucrats to decide whether they're legal.
  17. What seems to be missed here isn't the virtue of bump stocks. It's the way unelected employees at the DOJ, ATF and other agencies are overstepping their remit and passing laws. Which is for the legislature to decide. I think bump stocks are stupid. But there's a right way to pass laws. ATF and DOJ edicts (by unelected bureaucrats) aren't the right way.
  18. Gotta say, that's one of the few areas where I disagree with Musk. Giving the rich and powerful any hope that there is a Plan B if we completely screw up the earth... Not a good idea. Edit: Especially since they'll take all the hotties and leave the rest of us with the notties.
  19. I don't know if it's still that way, but when I was a kid, I was barred from competing in cross country because of the asthma medicine I took. The (quite reasonable) premise was that it gave me an unfair advantage in terms of lung capacity and oxygen uptake. Where was the compassion for my plight? That I wasn't allowed to live my best, healthiest life, and still compete? Strangely, I never thought it was unfair. Things made a lot more sense back then. Thank goodness the pendulum is swinging back.
  20. Do you know if the flight plan called for a landing in Thailand? And if not, would they have filed a manifest with occupant passport numbers to fly over Thai airspace?
  21. Let's do a quick reality check here. Who stands to benefit most from a cease fire? Russia, whose economy is humming along and who aren't struggling at all to manufacture arms and move men and weapons to the front, or Ukraine, who no longer has an economy to speak of, is running out of manpower, and survives at the whim of feckless western politicians for money and weapons? Putin doesn't have to rebuild to keep fighting. Ukraine does. In that respect, Ukraine is the one that benefits. The risk to Russia is allowing them the delusion that they can come back in 5-10-20 years and take back their lost territory.
  22. Just spitballing here, but avid readers of Wingnut Weekly Gazette may suspect that a single sick passenger would have seen the plane directed to Swampy where they have emergency health care onsite 24/7 and many nearby hospitals, but the authorities may be less friendly toward the Shins. I still think it was most likely a routine chartered flight to move airline staff and a plane around. But I wouldn't bet the farm against Ms Yingluck showing up at a Bangkok event in the very near future. Besides, routine airline stuff is no fun to talk about...
  23. It'll be interesting to see where and when the plane pops up again. The wingnut in me suspects a clandestine "delivery" to Thailand, but the most likely scenario (IMO) is that they (FlyDubai) chartered the plane to fly some staff to where they were needed, and maybe to position the plane itself, as well. That based on your link showing a typical crew of 2+2, with the news now saying 9 crew and not mentioning any passengers.
  24. Good info. Thanks for the updates. Now the wingnut in me is going to troll you a little with 2 questions: 1) Did the plane fly onto the Phils, or return west from U-Tapao? 2) Were there any up-armored limousines among the "emergency response crews"?
  25. Just out of curiosity, where would Yingluck be coming from?
