Oh dear, truss drops another b****** Getting a lot of pushback after her comments, claims made with no evidence produced to back them up. “Mike Katz, of the Jewish Labour Movement, added: “We’re not sure what the ‘woke civil service culture that strays into antisemitism’ is. But what we are sure is that this is a desperate and divisive attempt by Liz Truss to drag Jews into her campaign to win over the Conservative membership with nonsense buzzword pledges.” Mike Clancy, the general secretary of Prospect, another civil service union, said Truss “should have a better grip on both the evidence and facts about what is happening in the civil service. If there is evidence, she should publish it”. https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2022/aug/12/liz-truss-protect-british-jews-antisemitism-woke-culture?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other

I hope you’re right. She is a gift to the opposition. She has no grasp of detail (she thought that carers allowance was taxable when responding to a carers question on how she would help those like him and said tax breaks blah blah blah. When the carer told her the allowance was a benefit and not subject to tax, she had no response on how she would help those like him) and is prone to ludicrous statements (for some reason during last nights hustings she made it clear she thinks there are women in gaol for tv license non payment). The opposition should be praying the tory base vote for her. #votetruss-the opposition’s choice.

Seems the guy is being investigated for links with right wing groups and was there during the attempted coup on January 6th. All speculation at this point of course...and he wasn’t charged for Jan 6th. “The suspect was identified as Ricky Shiffer, 42, according to the law enforcement official. He was not charged with any crimes in connection with the January 6 attack, the official said. Federal investigators are examining whether Shiffer may have had ties to far-right extremist groups, including the Proud Boys, the official said.” https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2022/aug/11/fbi-armed-man-gunfire-standoff-ohio?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other

Opening statement from truss at tonight’s hustings. “Pledging to not let the Lib Dems gain more councils across the country, Truss said she will “re-establish the Liberal Democrat unit at CCHQ to ensure a crackdown to stop that from happening”. Sounds like she has lost the plot completely. https://www.theguardian.com/politics/live/2022/aug/11/tory-leadership-liz-truss-rishi-sunak-brexit-economy-uk-politics-latest?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other

Hmm, truss camp appear to be getting antsy about sunak's campaign...going into attack mode ''Liz Truss, the foreign secretary, remains the frontrunner and this morning her camp is launching a fresh line of attack against her rival Rishi Sunak, the former chancellor. In an article for the Daily Telegraph two leading Truss supporters, Simon Clarke, the chief secretary to the Treasury, and Kwasi Kwarteng, the business secretary, accuse him of frustrating government attempts to realise the benefits of Brexit. They write: [Sunak] talks about cutting EU regulations, yet dug his heels in as chancellor against efforts to do exactly that and realise the benefits of Brexit. We both saw it in cabinet, including resisting reforms to the EU’s Solvency II regulation – making it harder for pension funds and investors to invest in British business and infrastructure – and being backward-leaning on moving ahead with legislation to fix issues with the Northern Ireland protocol.'' https://www.theguardian.com/politics/live/2022/aug/11/tory-leadership-liz-truss-rishi-sunak-brexit-economy-uk-politics-latest?filterKeyEvents=false&page=with:block-62f4acea8f083b8f443fefef#block-62f4acea8f083b8f443fefef

Seems that truss is will to speak to Nicola Sturgeon though https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2022/aug/10/nicola-sturgeon-says-liz-truss-asked-her-how-to-get-into-vogue?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other Love the final paragraph “The Guardian has approached Vogue for comment on whether Truss is to appear in a future issue.” #votetruss- she really wants to be in Vogue magazine.

There certainly has been a lot revealed about how the tory party is split between two camps who clearly do not like, respect or have tolerance for each other or divergent views. These will not be easy to heal and are going to haunt the party for a long time to come- or at least until there is a wholesale clear out of mps from one faction to the other. Whether this is through defections or electoral defeat I don’t know but the party is split and in deep trouble. Electing truss as leader is going to make things a lot worse for the party…

Sunak being pressed quite hard on bbc but starting to waffle and getting flustered when pressed on how he resigned from johnson’s govt. Almost lost his snake oil salesman cool. https://www.theguardian.com/politics/live/2022/aug/10/liz-truss-rishi-sunak-conservative-leadership-race-chris-skidmore-defects-energy-prices-uk-politics-latest?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other He’s had a fair go at truss’ plans as well. Interview ends with interviewer letting everyone know truss dodged the invitation to be interviewed. Maybe she hoped gb news would pitch softer questions…good job the audience didn’t.

Loved this exchange from truss’ gb news interview “Q: I am a carer and I work very hard for just under £70 a week. We save money for the NHS. I am having to use my life savings. What will you do to help? Truss thanks the man for what he does. It is incredibly important, she says. She says it is better for people to be looked after by their families. She wants to look at the tax system to ensure it can better support people who do take time off to care for someone, she says. But she would have to see how that interacts with the benefits system. The questioner says carer’s allowance is a benefit. Changes to the tax system would not help, he says. Truss says she wants to ensure money goes to councils, so they can help. But we need to look at the system, she says. She says she does not have a detailed answer. But in principle she wants to help people caring for people at home. The questioner says government has had plenty of time to think about this. Carers cannot withdraw their labour, he says. Truss says she will support families “who do the right thing” You just got schooled truss…absolutely no grasp of minutia of her own policies. https://www.theguardian.com/politics/live/2022/aug/10/liz-truss-rishi-sunak-conservative-leadership-race-chris-skidmore-defects-energy-prices-uk-politics-latest?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other

Yet another truss u-turn coming up. Sunak is all over this one.. “Liz Truss has denied she is ruling out providing extra help with energy bills beyond tax cuts, as the frontrunner for the Conservative leadership embarked on what appeared to be the beginnings of a U-turn on the issue.“ https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2022/aug/10/liz-truss-refuses-to-rule-out-help-with-energy-bills-in-apparent-u-turn-rishi-sunak?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other

Boris Johnson rules out immediate cost-of-living measures
Bluespunk replied to Scott's topic in World News
Again that's not true as todays meeting between ministers and the energy companies about windfall taxes show. Ministers [well some, johnson is doing nothing useful, but then again...] and govt are both at work... Any corners are of tory making. -
Boris Johnson rules out immediate cost-of-living measures
Bluespunk replied to Scott's topic in World News
Not true-the govt can request the speaker to recall Parliament. Does not have to be a specific request from the pm. Not that it matters though as johnson-inept and ineffective as he is- is still pm. https://www.parliament.uk/about/how/occasions/recallparliament/ -
Nope. I repeatedly pointed out to you johnson made clear he wouldn’t act and he hasn’t. In fact I pointed out johnson, truss and sunak were doing nothing and not committing to a plan of action no matter who wins. None of those trying to push forward with windfall taxes are pm or competing to be pm. In addition the plans being considered are sunak’s rather than those truss advocates. Neither candidate has as of yet committed to following through on these moves, though I’m guessing sunak will as they are basically his idea. You really should pay attention to detail and not make false claims about what other posters say…

Boris Johnson rules out immediate cost-of-living measures
Bluespunk replied to Scott's topic in World News
Looks like other cabinet members have decided to act even if johnson won’t. Looks like they are going with sunak’s planned windfall tax plans. No sign of johnson getting involved though and I doubt truss will be happy her opponents plans are being dusted off… https://www.theguardian.com/business/2022/aug/10/uk-ministers-to-meet-energy-bosses-amid-talk-of-toughening-up-windfall-tax-cost-of-living?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other -
Uh oh…bad news for the truss camp. Looks like some ministers, tired I would guess of johnson’s inactivity, have decided to look at sunak’s tax plans for the energy industry. “Ministers are to meet energy company executives on Thursday to discuss measures to tackle the rising cost of living as the UK government considers beefing up a windfall tax on their profits. The chancellor, Nadhim Zahawi, and the business secretary, Kwasi Kwarteng, will meet gas and electricity bosses as the Treasury considers toughening the 25% levy on the profits of North Sea oil and gas operators announced in May. Before Zahawi’s predecessor, Rishi Sunak, announced the tax in May, ministers were split on whether to introduce it, with Kwarteng among those to oppose it.” https://www.theguardian.com/business/2022/aug/10/uk-ministers-to-meet-energy-bosses-amid-talk-of-toughening-up-windfall-tax-cost-of-living?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other #votetruss- quickly now before anyone notices sunak’s plans are being viewed as a solution to the misery of the energy crisis.
